After everything Ruth had done—all the effort she had poured in—wasn't it all for the Greene family's support?
If she were going to turn herself in, why go through all this trouble in the first place? A wave of resentment toward Emma began to grow in her chest.
Why couldn't Emma help her out, just a little? They'd been friends for years. This wasn't even a big deal for a family like the Greenes.
Emma gently held her hand and asked softly, "You're upset with me, aren't you?"
Ruth lowered her head, clearly displeased. "I don't want to confess. I don't want to go to prison. I'll be a walking joke, and I can't live like that."
That would be worse than death for her.
Emma argued, "But the Liddells clearly have no interest in settling this quietly with you. That's going to be a problem."
"Exactly. I even went to talk to Noelle myself, and you saw it—she didn't give me a shred of courtesy. That girl has no respect," Ruth replied. She hated the Liddells with everything in her.
Back then, Noelle's parents insisted on fighting the Merlocks for that bid. In the end, their deaths paved the way for the Merlocks to win the bid, and her family enjoyed years of success and prosperity.
But now that Noelle had grown up, she came back and sought revenge, bringing chaos to the Merlocks. Ruth thought it was unforgivable and that Noelle had always been her curse.
Emma let out a long sigh, "Which is why turning yourself in is really the best path. Let the judge handle it. I truly believe you never intended to hurt Noelle's parents. If that's the case, you won't face anything too serious."
Ruth gave a bitter smile as tears rolled down her cheeks. But deep down, she felt herself sinking. It finally dawned on her that seeking help from Emma was a dead end after all. If even her best friend refused to help, then she had no choice but to rely on herself. No one else could be trusted when things really hit the fan.
Emma noticed the shift in Ruth's expression and quietly understood her inner turmoil. She also understood why Ruth, having lived as a wealthy socialite for so long, was terrified of prison.
But when you broke the law, you had to face the consequences. As for Noelle, Emma already had a heavy guilt in her heart.
Ruth wiped her tears. "Then I'll go now. Looks like there's nothing more I can do for you anyway."
Emma nodded gently. "Take care. If you ever need something, don't hesitate to call me."
