Cedric's expression was cold as he flatly said, "Mrs. Merlock, I suggest you worry about yourself."
Ruth let out a dry laugh. "If I end up in jail, don't think you and your mom will walk away unharmed. The Greene family was involved, too, because you profited plenty from the clean energy project."
She smiled triumphantly. It was clear she'd prepared multiple backup plans. If the Greenes thought they could wash their hands of it now, they were dead wrong.
Livid, Magnus' face flushed with rage. "That's nonsense! My mom and Cedric would never stoop to your level!"
"Oh, please, your mom is just a stepmom. If Cedric dies, the entire Greene family fortune goes to you. Don't you think she'd plan for that?"
"Shut up," Cedric snapped and glared at Ruth. "Is this all you people know—manipulation and threats and nothing else?"
Ruth flinched under his glare but mustered the courage to say, "All I'm saying is, if I go down, I'm dragging all of you with me. Your mom is going to prison, too."
With that, she turned and left in a hurry. She had to act fast and think of something.
Cedric's expression was grim as he watched her leave. "I regret not cutting the ties between Mom and the Merlocks sooner."
"This isn't your fault, Cedric. But you have to trust Mom; she'd never do anything like that." Magnus worried if Cedric might believe Ruth's words now.
After all, relationships between stepmoms and stepsons had always been tense, especially when it involved inheritance.
Cedric patted Magnus on the shoulder. "I know the Merlocks better than anything. This is all they're capable of."
Magnus' eyes turned red as he hugged Cedric tightly. "You're the best brother, Ced."
Despite his young age and naivety, Magnus was truly touched that Cedric trusted him so much.
Cedric frowned in disgust and shoved him away. "You're an adult. Don't act like a kid crying over nothing."
"I don't care. You're still my best brother." Magnus stifled. His red eyes made him look rather pitiful.
Cedric sternly instructed, "Stay with Mom for the next few days. Don't let the Merlocks anywhere near her."
