However, Noelle had lost her appetite and dumped all the food straight into the trash. She didn't need Cedric's concern. From that moment on, she had to learn to live on her own.
Each breath sent waves of pain crashing in. So, this was how painful it was to strip away one's dependence on someone. Noelle lay in bed alone, covering her face with her hands as sobs escaped her.
Meanwhile, Cedric lay motionless on the hospital bed, staring at the message Noelle had just sent.
Beside him, Magnus had had enough. "Won't you at least eat something?"
Cedric put his phone down. He really had no appetite. His voice was hoarse. "How's Mom?"
"She's stable. For now, they need to keep her under observation and wait for a kidney match." Magnus looked dejected. Why didn't either of them match?
If he had matched, he would have donated his kidney without hesitation. But fate had to pair the match with the one person it shouldn't have. Ruth had ulterior motives and would use this chance to force the Greenes into cleaning up the mess from back then.
Cedric nodded. "For now, just stay with Mom. Don't leave her side."
Magnus muttered, "I will. But please don't do anything rash. Mom said she can wait. She doesn't need Mrs. Merlock's kidney."
Cedric gripped his phone tightly, feeling like the universe was playing a cruel joke on him. After a long pause, he finally spoke. "I'll find a kidney as soon as possible. I won't let her recovery be delayed."
Magnus sighed. "Don't burden yourself. And whatever you do, don't agree to anything the Merlocks want. If you do, Mom and I will both carry that guilt forever."
They both knew the Merlocks had manipulated them. But what could they do?
Cedric patted Magnus's shoulder. "I know. And you should start learning how to manage the company. I don't have the energy right now, and I'll need your help."
"I'll do my best and won't let you down. I'll ask Alfred if I don't understand anything. Don't worry about me." Magnus had never seen Cedric like this before, and it tore him up that he couldn't do more.
After he left, he spotted Alfred, and it looked like he had seen his savior. "Alfred, thank god you're here. My brother's not eating or taking his meds."
Alfred sighed. "This is a mess. Just focus on learning the business and take on more for his sake. The more you handle the business, the easier it'll be for him."
