Chapter 36
A throat cleared from somewhere in the room.
I blinked, tore my lips from Aaron and looked past his shoulders. George sat casually in his wheelchair, an eyebrow raised in amusement like he’d been there the whole damn time. He crossed his arms, pulled his lips into a half–smirk and said:
“This is what you two meant when you said you were ‘just friends‘, huh?”
*Jane*
I buried my face in Aaron’s shoulder. A wave of heat surged up my neck, spreading across my cheek.
Of course George had to be there. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d heard us and then wheeled himself here just to make a point. Wouldn’t put it past the old man.
Aaron didn’t let go of me. Instead, he turned and glared at his grandpa. “Don’t you have anything better to do? It’s not even six yet. Go back to sleep.”
“I may be in a wheelchair, but I’ve still got a social life.” As if to prove a point, he wheeled himself deeper into the living room. He smirked at us. “You’re not the only one who likes to know what’s going on around here.”
If not for how awkward and slightly uncomfortable the situation was, I would have burst out in laughter. George was a real character, a rare

gem.
Aaron let out a quiet breath, his foreheaf resting against mine. “I shouldn’t keep kissing you.”
But George heard him. “Well, I didn’t stop you. By all means, carry on. You can pretend I’m a coat rack.”
I peeked past Aaron’s shoulder, meeting George’s eyes. I grinned and winked at him. I knew for a fact that he was just trying to bait Aaron. I bet he’d never let us live that whole ‘friend‘ thing down.
Aaron snorted but didn’t pull away. His breath ghosted over my lips. It was obvious he was debating whether to call George’s bluff and keep kissing me.
“Well?” George prompted.
Aaron sighed. He tightened his arms around me. Then, without another word, he bent slightly, holding me firmly in his arms and turned toward the stairs.
“You can put me down. I can walk,” I mumbled into his collarbone, even though I made no move to leave.
Aaron just chuckled. “Of course you can.”

Chapter 3:
Aaron scoffed. “No. But he is stubborn as hell.” He paused for a beat before he continued. “He wasn’t always like this. After Grandma passed last spring, it hit him harder than he let on. They were mated for nearly fifty years. I think something in him died when she did.”
I turned toward him, resting a hand on his chest. It didn’t take long for him to pull me closer, and then I was half–laying on him. Aaron then brought my fingertips to his lips.
Lucky whined at the intimate gesture, wanting more.
“I brought him down from Washington right after the funeral. Figured. he shouldn’t be alone. I thought I’d set him up at Moon ridge, one of the better nursing homes for older wolves.” Aaron laughed. “But then, he escaped.”
