Sharon Nash was pregnant!
She sat on the living room sofa, staring at the ultrasound results, her fingertips trembling with excitement. Her husband, York Fordham, didn't know yet. She wanted to give him a surprise.
But Sharon had no idea that at this very moment, York was busy making plans to bring Emeline Monroe—his first love, who was currently three months pregnant—into their home. And he planned to have Sharon personally take care of her!
When Sharon answered his call, her mind went completely blank. She gripped the ultrasound printout, the joy on her face morphing into sheer disbelief.
Over the phone, York's voice was matter-of-fact. "Caleb Fletcher was killed in the line of duty. Emeline is three months pregnant and has no one to look after her. I'll be picking her up in a few days, and she'll stay with us until the baby is born. Sharon, I'm leaving the responsibility of caring for her to you."
For two whole minutes, Sharon couldn't utter a single word.
Caleb's face flashed in her mind.
The guy who always had a cigarette clamped between his teeth and a roguish smirk on his face.
The guy who had once looked at her with red-rimmed eyes and said, "You love York that much? You'd rather die than give me a chance? Fine, I'll back off. Emeline wants to marry me, so I'll marry her. Consider it my final act of devotion to you."
He was... dead??
York's voice broke through her thoughts. "What's wrong? Suddenly realizing Caleb was the one you truly loved?"
Snapping back to reality, Sharon dug her nails into her palms. Her eyes reddened at the news of Caleb's sudden death. "Even if you didn't consider him a friend, you guys still grew up together. He is dead... What's the point of saying something like that?"
She took a deep breath, trying to suppress the tremor in her chest. "You know perfectly well who I love. Why say things just to hurt me?"
The man she loved was York. Everyone in the Capital knew it.
York remained silent.
Sharon let out a bitter chuckle. Of course. To York, her love wasn't a blessing. It was a curse, an annoyance, something he held in absolute contempt.
Because the woman York loved most, the flawless first love who owned his heart, was Emeline!
And now, before she even had time to mourn Caleb, she was being forced to face Emeline.
