No More Mrs. Forgotten novel Chapter 9

Hayley didn't respond, or rather, she deliberately chose to ignore his deflection. She simply stared at him, waiting for him to speak again. She was demanding a promise from him—a definitive stance.

Whether he would keep that promise or if his stance was just a superficial platitude didn't matter right now. In this moment, she needed to hear him say it.

Backed into a corner, York finally declared, "Sharon is my wife. I will fulfill my responsibilities."

Only then did Hayley say, "Good."

She turned and resumed walking. York followed close behind, and after two seconds of silence, he asked, "Are you certain?"

"It's my best guess," Hayley replied.

York felt a surge of exasperation. Had Hayley just used that as an excuse to put him in his place?

Still, this was the first time she had ever directly challenged him like this. York's expression darkened.

But then Hayley added, "You two are married. You should know the answer to that better than I do."

York's face grew even grimmer, but he simply replied, "Right."

Neither of them spoke again; the only sound was their footsteps echoing down the corridor. But York's mind was racing.

When could it have happened?

Was it possible?

His thoughts drifted back. A little over a month ago, he and Sharon had indeed... slept together.

Sharon had been like a clingy kitten, melting into his embrace, absolutely refusing to let go.

So... was it that night?

York frowned.

But then he remembered Hayley said it was just a guess. Maybe Sharon really was just sick. If she were truly pregnant, why wouldn't she tell him? Why pick fights with him instead?

Knowing Sharon's personality, if she were actually carrying his child, she'd be shouting it from the rooftops. She'd probably throw a massive banquet to celebrate.

So, it probably wasn't true, right?

York let out a quiet sigh of relief.

Back in the living room, Sharon was growing anxious. She finally stood up, just as the two of them walked back in.

Hayley spoke first. "You two should head home now. Drive safe."
