Eleanor took off her lab coat. Callie was staying behind to record data and told her to go ahead, and Eleanor reminded him not to stay too late.
As Eleanor walked out of her office with her bag, a figure in the hallway smiled and approached her. "Miss Sutton, heading home?"
"Gavin? What are you doing here?" Eleanor asked in surprise.
"I'm here to take you home. Mr. Goodwin was concerned you'd be tired from working late, so he sent me to be your driver," Gavin explained.
Eleanor did feel exhausted, so for safety's sake, she didn't refuse.
The ride home was smooth, thanks to Gavin's steady driving, and she felt a surge of gratitude.
When they reached the parking garage, Eleanor thanked him. "Gavin, thank you for your trouble. You should get some rest."
"Miss Sutton, if you want to thank someone, thank Mr. Goodwin," Gavin said, not daring to take the credit. He was just an employee following orders.
The gesture came from his boss.
Eleanor nodded and walked towards the elevator. She checked the time—ten past ten. She gently pushed open the door to her apartment. Only a warm yellow floor lamp was lit in the living room, filling the space with a quiet, cozy ambiance.
She wondered if Joslyn had already put their daughter to bed in the master bedroom. As she tiptoed from the entryway into the living room, the scene before her made her stop in her tracks.
Ian was sitting on the sofa, holding their sleeping daughter in his arms, watching a soccer game on mute.
Eleanor approached quietly. Ian looked up at her and said in a low voice, "You're back."
"I'm sorry for taking up your time," Eleanor whispered. She couldn't deny that Ian's own work schedule was demanding.
"That's good," Ian murmured. Eleanor stepped aside, and he walked out of the room.
After hearing the front door click shut, Eleanor grabbed her pajamas and went into the bathroom, planning to take a quick shower before bed.
Down in the parking garage, Gavin was waiting for his boss. Seeing Ian come down, he opened the rear car door. "Mr. Goodwin, the video conference is scheduled for eleven-thirty. We should make it."
Ian nodded and ducked into the car. The black Maybach drove out of the garage, its taillights tracing a red arc in the night before disappearing around the corner.
A week later, a piece of news broke in the financial papers—Yeaton Holdings was facing bankruptcy due to a ruptured capital chain, and its stock price had plummeted.
On her way to the cafeteria with Gwenda, Eleanor heard the news. She later pulled out her phone to check—Yeaton Holdings was embroiled in a debt crisis, and its chairman, Roland Yeaton, was on the brink of ruin.
As for the mastermind behind the crisis at Yeaton Holdings, Eleanor had a good idea who it was.

Story not going anywhere....
I love this couple, I hope they get back together!...
