Mansfield nodded. As he was about to leave, he turned back to look at Eleanor and suddenly called out, "Ellie."
He had used her nickname again, gently.
Eleanor froze, looking up at him.
A beam of sunlight from the opposite hallway cast a golden glow around him. He looked at her, his eyes clear and sincere. "Even though we're just friends now, if you ever need anything, anytime, just say the word, and I'll be there."
His voice was soft, but it carried the distinct firmness and strength of a soldier.
It wasn't a romantic confession but a promise that transcended romance, something far more profound.
Eleanor looked at the man before her-his gaze open, his posture erect-and felt a lump form in her throat. She gave a small nod, a smile tugging at her mouth even as her eyes stung. "I know. Thank you, Mansfield."
Mansfield smiled back, as bright and handsome as ever, like the warm sunlight behind him. After one last look at Eleanor, he turned and strode out of the room.
Principal Maxwell watched Mansfield leave, then turned his gaze to Eleanor. He had overheard that their relationship had reverted to friendship, a fact that gave him pause. He sighed. "That kid has always been so loyal and dedicated to those he cares about."
His tone was full of admiration. He then shifted his focus, looking at Eleanor with a kind expression. "Eleanor, do you remember me mentioning Sophia last time?"
Of course, Eleanor remembered. Sophia's legs also required brain-computer interface technology.
Eleanor nodded. "I remember. What are you suggesting, Principal Maxwell?"
"I'm leaving Ryan here to continue the research, and I'll provide him with Sophia's case details. If he needs your help with his research, I hope you'll offer him some guidance," Principal Maxwell said, indicating he didn't intend to trouble Eleanor directly with Sophia's case this time.
Sensing her avoidance, Principal Maxwell didn't press the matter. He smiled kindly. "Of course. Go on, get back to your work."
Eleanor turned and left the room. As she walked out of the hospital building, the early‑summer sun hit her full in the face.
Eleanor checked the time. It had been a while since she'd met up with Joy Thatcher. Since she had the afternoon free, she decided to give her a call.
When Eleanor initiated the invitation, Joy was utterly surprised on the other end of the line. "Dr. Sutton, are you sure you have time for afternoon tea with me?"
"What? Am I not allowed to take a break and treat you to tea?"
"It's certainly a rare occasion," Joy laughed. "Alright, I'm on my way."
