After finishing her chat with Simone, Eleanor's mind returned to her experiments. The recent conference in Montclair had been very inspiring. Medicine, after all, was often a process of trial and error.
To conserve funding, Eleanor was trying to minimize the margin for error as much as possible. This was a new direction, supported by dedicated funding.
In the afternoon, Eleanor held a meeting to announce the new research focus. Afterward, she said to Diaz Archer, "Come with me to a meeting at Meridian Dynamics tomorrow. Their new R&D project might be a good reference for us, and we also need to negotiate the rights to use three of their patents."
Callie couldn't help but smile. "Eleanor, that's something you could probably solve with a single phone call to Mr. Goodwin."
Eleanor smiled back. "We should still follow the proper procedures."
She liked to keep business and personal matters separate.
At five o'clock, Ian's car pulled up in front of the lab. Evelyn was waiting inside, wearing her small backpack.
Eleanor opened the car door and got in. Evelyn immediately wrapped her arms around her. Cradling her daughter, Eleanor asked, "What would you like to eat tonight?"
Evelyn tilted her head in thought, then turned to her father. "Daddy, what should we eat tonight?"
"Let's let your mother decide," Ian said, turning from the driver's seat to look at the mother and daughter in the back.
Eleanor met Ian's gaze and thought for a moment. "There's a good restaurant near our house that Evelyn likes."
"Alright. You navigate," Ian said, his eyes on her in the rearview mirror.
At the restaurant, they ordered Evelyn's favorite dishes. Under the lights, Eleanor ate very little. The man across from her noticed and asked with concern, "What's wrong? Not hungry?"
Eleanor handed their daughter to him. Ian carried her for a short distance before Evelyn wanted to get down. She took her father's hand with one of hers and reached for Eleanor's with the other. "Mommy, let's hold hands and walk!"
Sensing her daughter was feeling insecure, Eleanor took her small hand.
The park's lampposts cast a soft, warm glow, outlining the figures of the three of them. Evelyn skipped happily, protected between her parents as they continued along the park path.
The evening breeze was cool. After one lap, they returned to the car.
Tired from walking, Evelyn happily snuggled into Eleanor's arms, rubbing her sleepy eyes. Ian started the car and drove toward Cloudcrest Manor, with the two SUVs in their security detail following close behind.
When they reached the underground garage, Eleanor looked at her daughter, who had already fallen asleep in her arms. As she got out of the car, Ian immediately came over to take the child. "I'll get her. This little one's getting heavy."
