The doctor handed him a form. After paying the fee, Henry returned to find Selma waiting for him, looking at him like a child waiting for a parent.

"Does it still hurt?" he asked gently.

Selma nodded. "Yes. They gave me seven stitches." The pain was worse now than when it had been bleeding.

"Come on, let's get that CT scan to make sure everything's okay," Henry said.

Selma nodded and stood up, but she was still dizzy. Seeing her sway, Henry instinctively put an arm around her shoulders, letting her lean on him for support. She looked up at him gratefully, a faint blush coloring her pale cheeks.

When they got to the imaging department, the nurse at the counter looked them over. "Excuse me, is there any chance the patient could be pregnant? CT scans are not recommended during pregnancy."

The question hit Henry like a ton of bricks, bringing back memories of that night. He turned to look at Selma.

She, however, answered the nurse with confidence. "No, I'm not."

Henry grabbed her wrist and pulled her aside. "Are you sure? This isn't something to joke about."

Selma looked him in the eye, her expression unwavering. "I took a pill the morning after."

Henry froze, momentarily speechless. He had made a mistake, hurt her, and forced her to deal with the consequences alone. Even he wanted to call himself a scumbag.

"I'm so sorry," he whispered.

"Henry," Selma said quietly, "is Miss Shannon waiting for you? You should go. I'll be fine."

He looked up, pushing down his anxiety. "It's okay. I'll leave after your parents get here."

Selma knew how much he liked Vanessa and didn't want him to break his promise. If it weren't for her, they would be on their date right now.

"Henry, thank you, really. But I don't want to be a burden. Please, go. Don't keep Miss Shannon waiting."

Henry was stunned. He was sure Selma had feelings for him. Yet here she was, pushing him away. Had that night changed everything? Had he been that awful? A blow to his masculine pride landed squarely in his chest.
