He left to save Zoey because she might have died.

He went to save someone. He didn’t betray Nella or anything. Why would she mind?

And honestly, Alfred didn’t even know what kind of answer he wanted.

If she were upset, he’d feel bad.

If she wasn’t upset, he’d feel even worse.

He stared at her calm, steady face, and something uneasy rose in him-along with an annoying flicker of anger.

That pointless spark of anger made him push again.

“You’re really not mad?” he repeated.

Nella almost laughed, but a sharp heat still shot up inside her chest.

She had tried so hard to tell herself not to care anymore.

She kept thinking that if she could survive a near-death situation like that, then maybe fate wasn’t that cruel.

She shouldn’t waste time on people or things that didn’t matter.

But why did he keep bringing it up? Why make her remember the moment he abandoned her?

She looked straight back at him. “Weren’t you going back to save a life? If someone is dying, why would you think I’d be mad?”

Alfred fell silent again. “I … ”

That day, he was perfectly fine calling her a liar and leaving her to suffer under ice and snow. And now he wanted to know if she was mad? That question was pointless.
