“Ugh. Zoey’s parents were the ones making things hard for Nella. My wife cussing you is one thing, but why am I dragged into it?”
As Mason spoke, he grabbed the coat beside him and draped it casually over his arm.
“I’m not staying with you. I’ve gotta go home and smooth things over with Jasmine.”
With that, he took his phone back from Alfred and walked straight out of the private room.
Alfred stayed where he was.
He just kept drinking, one silent gulp after another.
“Heh! Nella’s perfectly capable. Why would I go
stick
my nose in?”
Alfred let out a cold laugh; his drinking never stopped.
“Damn it! Guess I owe her!”
He cursed under his breath and slammed the bottle hard onto the coffee table.
Grabbing his coat, he stood and strode out of the room.
By the time Alfred arrived at the hospital, it was already past midnight.
The inpatient ward was quiet. Only the night-duty nurses sat at the station, bored, scrolling on their phones.
“What are you looking at? You’re so into it.”
“Marshal.”
“Who’s Marshal?”
“The
puppy Dr. Milo adopted a while ago.”
The nurse holding the phone showed a few photos to her coworker.
Alfred’s steps stopped short.
His gaze snapped toward the two nurses.
“Handsome, right?”

“Yeah, he’s way too handsome. Look at that build. Those muscle lines. And that golden hair. Absolute perfection.”
“No wonder Dr. Milo’s obsessed. She posts him on Facebook every day.”
The two nurses stared at Marshal’s photos like they were about to drool, gasping now and then.
Alfred’s face stayed hidden in the shadows.
The alcohol-reddened color drained, then returned, shifting between pale and livid.
So Nella really is keeping a puppy outside?
And posting about it on Facebook every day?
Damn it!
What kind of shameless man lets a married woman support him instead of doing honest work?
Does he have any dignity?
Does he?
Alfred felt like his lungs were on the verge of exploding.
Fury boiling over, he turned and left, pulling out his phone to check Nella’s Facebook.
But when he opened her page, it was completely empty.
That was when he realized something. Nella had blocked him from viewing her posts.
Alfred’s breathing grew sharp and heavy.
A fire spiraled out of control in his chest, desperate for release.
Inside the surgical building, Nella was reviewing Patrick’s chart when the duty room door was suddenly pushed open.
She looked up sharply and saw Alfred standing there.
The corners of his eyes were red.
His gaze burned as he stared straight at her.
“Why are you here?” Nella frowned and asked.
Her tone was the familiar coldness Alfred knew so well.

And that very coldness only pushed his already fraying nerves closer to the edge.
He walked in and yanked her up from the chair.
The smell of alcohol rushed into Nella’s nose, making her frown instinctively.
“You drank a lot?” Nella asked, unconsciously stepping back.
Alfred clocked it.
He wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her hard into his chest.
Nella tried to struggle free, but Alfred’s arm was like iron, locking her in place so she couldn’t move at all.
