Chapter 18 I Won’t Bother You
Wesley’s messages kept coming one after another, making her phone ding constantly.
Nella couldn’t help but grin at his long stream of texts.
She put down her fork and typed back.
“Dr. Keywood, it’s past midnight in Glacieroth, right? You’re still up?”

Almost instantly, Wesley replied, “I’m on night shift. Just finished rounds and got back to the office.
“Have you had breakfast?
“Heading out soon?
“Remember-see a therapist when you can. Don’t just tough it out.”
Every time Nella sent a message, Wesley would answer with multiple lines.
She’d noticed his habit back when she was hospitalized in Glacieroth.
He never typed one big paragraph. Instead, he sent line after line, each ping sounding like popcorn popping nonstop.
It made her picture him as a long-winded professor lecturing endlessly, and she couldn’t stop laughing out loud.
“Thanks, Dr. Keywood. I’ll remember that.”
Alfred sat across from her, watching her phone buzz over and over. He barely got a word in.
Seeing her small, unconscious smile as she replied was distracting enough.
When she actually laughed, he couldn’t hold it in anymore,
“Who’s texting you so much this early?”
His voice sounded casual, but there was a subtle edge to it.
“Huh?”
Nella looked up briefly. Just then, another notification popped up from Wesley. This time, it

Alfred slammed his fork onto the tray with a loud clank. The sudden noise made her jump.
Her finger accidentally tapped the voice message.
Wesley’s warm voice came through her phone. “We’ve got an emergency. Let’s talk later.”
“Okay. Go handle it,” Nella replied.
When she looked up, she noticed Alfred’s expression darkened, his eyes sharp and cold.
Even though they were married and not exactly in love, they usually showed each other some respect. Nella had never seen him look that grim.
She thought about her message to Wesley.
Alfred didn’t like phones at the table. Usually, she’d put hers away so she could enjoy any quiet moments with him. Clearly, she’d annoyed him.
Feeling guilty, she set the phone down.
“Sorry. Did I ruin your breakfast?” she asked, standing and heading to the kitchen.
She grabbed some plastic wrap and covered the sandwich he’d made.
“I’ll just eat on the way. I won’t bother you. Enjoy your meal.”
Nella didn’t want their final two months to end with fights. She just wanted things to stay calm between them.
If she’d interrupted his meal, she’d make sure not to eat in front of him.
But her move didn’t lighten his mood one bit. It actually seemed to make him angrier.
She figured he was being petty, but she wasn’t up for trying to cheer him up. Slinging her bag over her shoulder, she nibbled on her food while walking and made her way out the door.
