Chapter 184 Shifting Priorities

“And haven’t you noticed that Alfred has been a bit impatient with you lately? The most urgent thing right now isn’t figuring out how to deal with Nella, but how to win Alfred’s heart back.”
Only then did unease and anxiety finally surface on Zoey’s reluctant face.
She frowned, worry flickering in her eyes.
“Yeah. I don’t know what kind of spell that bitch Nella cast on Alfred. Lately, he’s been taking her side every time, and it’s ruined my plans.”
Zoey absolutely refused to believe that Nella hadn’t used some trick to steal Alfred away.
Just a month ago, Alfred had indulged her in everything, even leaving Nella alone overseas for her sake.
But in such a short time, Alfred had suddenly stopped doting on her.
If it wasn’t Nella pulling strings, what else could it be?
“And the stupid Kirks too. They couldn’t even handle things properly and ended up letting Alfred find clues through them. Otherwise, Nella wouldn’t be having such a sweet life right now.”
Hearing her daughter say that, Eileen quickly covered Zoey’s mouth.
“Enough. Do you actually want your brother dead?”
Eileen glanced toward the door and lowered her voice. “Don’t ever let your dad hear that again. He’s pissed at you lately. No matter what, Patrick is his only son.”
Zoey pouted. “I’m his only daughter too, and he slapped me so hard.”
Thinking of that, Zoey still felt resentful.
Eileen sighed helplessly.
“Patrick is his son after all. The Macks’ business will eventually be passed on to him. Your father is old- fashioned. When it comes to the Macks’ assets, he still wants to leave them to a son.
“If Patrick hadn’t been saved that day, who knows who would be inheriting the Mack business now?”
Zoey didn’t care much. Then she thought of something and smiled at Eileen.
“Mom, you’re Patrick’s stepmom. Do you really think he sees you as his real mother?”
As she spoke, she raised an eyebrow. “Once he takes over Dad’s business, he might just kick the two of us
out.”
Zoey’s words made Eileen’s expression change. She instinctively retorted, “How could that be? Even if I’m not his biological mother, I raised him from childhood. I’ve been good to him.”
“Can’t be so sure.”

Zoey blinked. “If Patrick finds out his mother was driven to death by you, do you think he’d still be kind to you?”
Zoey’s words startled Eileen so badly that she sprang up from the couch. “H-how do you know about that?”
“Mom, why are you scared of me? I’m not going to betray you.”
Zoey pulled Eileen back down and said, “Mom, instead of letting Patrick take over the Macks’ business and worrying about getting kicked out later, why don’t we join forces and find a way to get Dad to let me inherit it instead?”
Hearing that, Eileen frowned slightly. “Your dad won’t agree.”
“Oh, it’s not like we have to rush it now. We’ll have plenty of chances later. If Mack Group is in my hands, I’ll have Keywood Group backing me. Our family will only grow stronger. But if it falls into Patrick’s hands, that’s not necessarily the case.”
Zoey’s words had clearly swayed Eileen.
