Chapter 198 Keeping Up Appearances

Alfred had thought himself as being rational and restrained. He was even proud that he was someone ruthless enough to control even his most basic urges.
But now, he regretted it. The one who didn’t want a divorce anymore was him.
He even began to regret that if … if he hadn’t tried so hard to be that tough guy back then, if he and Nella had had a child together, would everything be different now?
His gaze drifted back to Nella without him realizing it.
Yet she maintained nothing more than a polite smile, showing no intention of explaining why they’d never had a sex life in three years.
Saying it out loud would be ridiculous anyway.
He didn’t know whether to laugh at her or laugh at himself.
“Thank you for your concern, Larissa, but I believe everyone has their own life. Having children isn’t mandatory.”
Nella was smiling, but there wasn’t the slightest warmth in her eyes.
“If you like kids so much, you should have a kid or two with Tyler soon. I’m sure Regis will be very glad.”
The moment the words left her mouth, Larissa’s expression changed.
“I… Tyler and I have always believed in being DINKS. We’re not having kids.”
Nella smiled at her and said nothing more.
But the look in her eyes clearly told Larissa to mind her own business.
Larissa understood and felt anger surge up her chest.
She was about to say something else when Alfred spoke in a low voice.
“What a coincidence. Nella and I are DINKS too. No need for you to worry, Aunt Larissa.”
As he spoke, Alfred glanced at Nella, his eyes swirling with complicated, unreadable emotions.
Seated beside their parents, Camelia quietly curled her lips and whispered, “It’s obvious Nella doesn’t want to have kids with him. Alfred sure knows how to preserve his dignity.”
Alfred heard it, but he pretended he hadn’t.
That line cut far too deep.
Nella patiently chatted with Regis a bit longer before finally finding an excuse to speak up.
“Regis, I really have to head back. I need to hand over to the colleague covering the night shift tomorrow morning.”

Regis could tell she was making an excuse and didn’t force her to stay. He nodded and said, “Alright. Have Alfred take you home.”
“Alright. Have Alfred take you home.”
“Okay.”
Nella didn’t refuse. She stood up immediately. “Then we’ll be heading out.”
After greeting Regis and everyone else in the room, she looked at Alfred, signaling him to hurry up.
Though Alfred felt frustrated, he cooperated completely. He stood up from the couch, took the coat handed over by the servant, and naturally draped it over Nella’s shoulders.
“Grandpa, we’ll be going now.”
With that, his long arm settled naturally around Nella’s shoulders. “Let’s go home.”
Nella’s body stiffened slightly, instinctively trying to pull away from his grip.
But Alfred seemed to anticipate her move and tightened his hold just a bit.
He leaned down close to her ear and said quietly, “If Grandpa notices we’re not getting along, he might make us stay the night to work on our relationship.”
With that single sentence, Nella’s struggling movements stopped at once.
She could only stiffen and let Alfred keep his arm around her as they walked out of the Keywood Estate gates together.
Only after they were out of everyone’s sight did Nella speak.
