Zoey was stunned by what he said. A wave of fear and panic filled her chest. She didn’t dare think too deeply about it.

She ran after him, calling his name as she spoke.

“Alfred, you can’t be this heartless to me. You must be confused by Nella right now!”

The truth was right in front of her, but Zoey refused to accept it.

She had once been lifted high by Alfred, a man everyone admired. How could she accept being pushed down to hell by him?

“If you didn’t care about me, why did you go out of your way to take down my mom’s video?” she cried. “You were worried she’d get attacked online. You were worried I’d be scared, right?”

This time, Zoey was truly crying. Tears streamed down her face without stopping.

Alfred suddenly stopped walking. He turned back to look at her.

Zoey thought her words had finally reached him. Hope lit up in her tear-filled eyes.

“You still care about me, don’t you?” she asked.

She took two shaky steps toward him.

But the cold look in his eyes made her freeze in place.

“What did you just say?” Alfred asked.

It was as if he had realized something. His voice trembled slightly.

Zoey didn’t notice. When she heard his question, she repeated the story about how Alfred had the video of Eileen hurting a dog removed from the internet.

She even stressed it again.

“Wasn’t it you who had all those videos taken down?”

Zoey had never asked him directly before. But after thinking it over, she believed no one else had that kind of power or would help her family like that. It had to be Alfred.

Alfred didn’t answer. Instead, his expression grew darker and darker.

Finished:

By now, Zoey could vaguely sense that Alfred was giving up on her. This was her only chance to wake his true feelings.

She ignored everything else and pressed on.

“Alfred, look carefully. You must have feelings for me. Otherwise, why would you help us this much? Right?”

Her eyes, full of tears, were also full of hope.

But Alfred’s expression only sank further.

Nearby, Mason, who had been watching quietly, suddenly caught the key point. He looked at Alfred.

“Wait. The woman who hurt Marshal is her mom?” he asked. “And you’re the one who had the video taken down?”

Alfred didn’t say anything. But his ugly face and clenched fists were enough to answer.

Mason covered his face hard, then rubbed it like he was trying to wake himself up. He really didn’t want to be dragged down by Alfred’s unbelievably poor judgment.

Still, he couldn’t help asking, “What were you thinking? You know how important Marshal is to Nella. And you helped the person who hurt her dog by taking the video down?”

Mason stared up at the ceiling, speechless.

He couldn’t understand how Alfred’s mind worked.

Alfred opened his mouth. After a long pause, he finally spoke in a shaking voice, explaining why he did it.

“I was worried Nella wouldn’t be able to handle it if she saw those videos.”

He explained it in a dry, stiff way, as if saying it out loud might comfort him.
