No Renewal My Contract Husband (Nella and Alfred) novel Chapter 389

Chapter 389 The Same Falling Snow

Alfred watched the carefree smile on Nella’s face in silence, his eyes stinging.

It seemed like she could always laugh so freely and naturally around everyone else except him.

Right now, watching her sit so casually on those stone steps, she looked nothing like the poised and proper woman she had always been in front of him. Instead, she radiated an ease he had never seen before.

She laughed like a child without a care in the world, waving the sparkler in her hand, her eyes lit up like a little girl who had just gotten her favorite toy.

She held Marshal in her arms, striking silly poses for Wesley’s camera.

He had never seen this side of Nella before.

He thought back to those years of marriage, when she would spend the holidays with him at the estate. She was always so quiet, staying by his side.

She would carefully nibble on the snacks the staff had prepared, occasionally making small talk with Regis.

She was knowledgeable about so many things. No matter what topic Regis brought up, she could always keep the conversation going, never letting an awkward silence fall.

Every New Year’s Eve, the family would have sparklers and small fireworks on hand, but only Camelia ever played with them.

He had assumed Nella didn’t like fireworks. After all, whenever Camelia invited her to join in, she always politely declined.

When Camelia kept insisting, Nella looked torn, but too polite to refuse.

So he had stepped in and turned Camelia down for her.

Then he told Nella that if she didn’t want to do something, she could just say no.

But now…

She clearly loved it. And she was having the time of her life, wasn’t she?

Maybe, Alfred thought, it wasn’t about whether she enjoyed it or not. Maybe it was just because the person beside her was Wesley.

That thought sent a sharp pain through his chest, so intense that his face went pale.

He wanted to go over to her, but he felt like he didn’t belong.

His presence, unwelcome as it was, would probably just ruin her mood.

Finally, he looked away and didn’t approach.

He shoved the bag of fireworks he had brought all this way into a nearby trash can.

As if the sky wanted to match his mood, the quiet night suddenly began to snow after days of stillness.

Pure white snowflakes drifted down from above, dusting his hair until it turned white.

“Alfred, have you ever heard that old saying?

“If we stand together in the same falling snow, it’s like we’ve grown old together. Does this count as us growing old together?”

Alfred’s mind suddenly flashed back to this time last year, when he had a rare moment of free time and walked home with Nella.

On the way back, it had started snowing just like this.

That was when Nella had said those words to him.

It was only a year ago, but right now, the memory felt impossibly vivid.

When he heard her say that, he had frozen.

He remembered his heart skipping several beats as he stared at Nella’s smiling eyes, completely caught off guard, not knowing how to respond.

But before he could say anything, Nella had already brushed it off herself.

“Ha, I’m just kidding. It’s the holidays. Thought I’d crack a joke to fit the mood. Look at you, all spooked.”

He had noticed the sadness in her eyes back then. So why had he just ignored it?

Did he truly not care, or had he chosen to look away?

She must have been so hurt.
