Chapter 9 Just Apologize and She’ll Be Fine

“Mason…”

Before Alfred could finish, there was a loud thud as Mason shut the door and left.

Zoey was stunned.

She stared at the closed door of the private room, grinding her teeth in anger.

Nella must have said something to Jasmine Craith to make Mason misunderstand her like this.

Beside her, Alfred picked up his coat. His hoarse voice carried a hint of exhaustion. “Let’s go. I’ll take you home first.”

Zoey immediately suppressed the darkness in her eyes and switched back to that pitiful expression. “Alfred, I really envy how popular Nella is. Even Mason, who usually doesn’t care about anything, scolded me for her sake. Not like me. I’ve only ever been close to you since childhood. It’s my fault. I depend on you too much, which is why Nella complained about me to Mason.”

There were so many implications hidden in those words.

Mason and Nella’s relationship wasn’t simple. Alfred held a special place in her heart. Nella had bad-mouthed her behind her back.

Zoey was very good at this kind of manipulation, and every time, she succeeded.

But this time, she noticed Alfred only remained silent, showing no sign of dissatisfaction with Nella over her words.

On the contrary, his eyes took on a thoughtful look as he murmured, “Is Nella … really mad?”

Though his voice was low, more like talking to himself, Zoey heard it crystal clear.

Panic rose in her chest, but on the surface, she put on an innocent look and went along with Alfred’s words. “Nella must be angry. It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have had my depression episode at that time and ruined Nella’s vacation mood.”

As she spoke, she discreetly observed Alfred’s gloomy expression.

“If Nella wasn’t mad, she would’ve called tonight instead of not calling at all and making you look embarrassed in front of everyone.”

When Zoey mentioned that Nella hadn’t called him, Alfred’s brow furrowed sharply. annoyance coloring his features.

He said in a low voice, “You can’t control when your depression episodes happen. If she’s going to be petty about even that, she’s just being unreasonable.”

Zoey lowered her eyes, suppressing her triumph. She looked up at Alfred again. “Alfred, please go back and make things right with Nella. Please!”

As she spoke, she grabbed Alfred’s arm and shook it playfully a few times.

Alfred thought of Nella’s cold demeanor when he’d seen her at the airport. His chest tightened inexplicably with panic..

His fist unconsciously clenched, though he said coldly, “Why should I apologize?”

As he spoke, he was already walking toward the exit, his pace unconsciously quickening.

“I’ll take

you home.”

Zoey suppressed her triumphant look. “Alright then.”

When they walked out of the private room, they saw the club manager approaching with a small box, saying to Zoey, “Ms. Mack, here’s the cake you ordered.”

“Great, thank you.”

Zoey took the cake and, after the club manager left, handed it to Alfred. “Alfred, just for my sake, please make things right with her. Otherwise, I’ll really feel terrible. I had the club’s pastry chef make this cake especially for her. When you get home, apologize properly.”

Seeing Alfred frown without taking it, she clasped her hands together in a pleading gesture. “Please, please?”

Alfred looked at the small cake in front of him and couldn’t help but remember the time he’d stopped by Nella’s hospital to pick her up after work and saw her sitting in her office eating cake.

Her cheeks were puffed out like a hamster focused on its food.

The moment she swallowed, her eyes curved into crescents with complete satisfaction. She’d looked absolutely adorable.

Thinking of this, the corners of his lips unconsciously curved up.

His hand had already unconsciously accepted the cake Zoey handed him.

Zoey smiled with her eyes crinkling. “That’s more like it, Alfred. Once she’s not mad at you anymore, I won’t feel so guilty.”

Alfred didn’t respond. His mind involuntarily flashed back to that day at the hotel when Nella had a stunned expression after he’d snapped at her.

Although Nella hadn’t been angry at the time, he figured that after leaving her alone there for two weeks, it was only natural for her to have some resentment.

Fine. This time was his fault. He’d just apologize when he got home.

Nella was easy to please. As long as he apologized, she’d soften and let go of any anger.

With this thought, his steps out of the club unconsciously quickened considerably.

Emerald Vista Bay Villa.

Nella jerked awake from her sleep.

In her dream, the suffocating feeling of being buried under snow and the desperate fear had left her breathless.

Her breathing was labored.

Suddenly, a sharp pain in her fingertip snapped her back from the nightmare.

It turned out her nail had broken off from gripping the couch too hard and embedded into the fabric.

The broken edge was stained with a faint trace of blood.

She frowned, stood up, and walked to the drawer where the first aid kit was kept. Taking out an iodine swab to disinfect her wound, she heard movement at the door.

Nella instinctively turned her head and saw Alfred coming in from outside, holding a cake box.

The moment she turned, their eyes met abruptly.

The silence created some awkwardness between them. Finally, Nella spoke first. “You’re back.”

She didn’t get up to fetch slippers for Alfred as she usually did. After greeting him, she turned

her attention back to disinfecting her fingertip.

Alfred froze for a moment but didn’t say anything. Thinking of Nella’s indifferent gaze just now, an inexplicable guilt crept into his chest.

He unconsciously touched the tip of his nose, bent down to get his slippers, changed into them, and walked over to Nella.

“What happened to your finger?”

He asked, his tone showing no obvious emotion, as if asking casually, yet also as if deliberately searching for a topic.

“Just scratched it by accident. It’s nothing.”

After disinfecting it, she put away the first aid kit. Just as she stood up, she saw a small cake box being held out in front of her. It was the one Alfred had brought in.

She looked up at Alfred questioningly.

Being looked at by Nella like this, a hint of discomfort appeared in Alfred’s eyes.

Then she heard him speak in an awkward tone. “I noticed before that you really like cake, so I picked one up on my way

back.”

Nella paused, clearly not expecting Alfred to have paid attention to something like that.

In the past, Nella would have been so happy her eyes would light up. She’d have eagerly taken it, opened it right away, and happily tasted it.

But now, she just glanced at the cake with calm, emotionless eyes, accepted it with a smile, and said, “Thanks.”

Then she placed the cake on the table.
