Scarlett knew all too well that even if she collapsed right in front of him, he probably wouldn’t bat an eye. In fact, he might even think she was putting on some kind of performance.

She had initially refused to iron his shirt, yet she had ended up offering to help anyway. Not only had she failed to be useful, but she had also managed to burn herself in the process. He probably thought she was just seeking his attention.

Scarlett never expected him to care about her-not even a little.

When Vincent asked if she was okay, Scarlett replied in an even tone, “I’m fine.”

And she truly was fine. It was just a minor burn from the hot iron. She gritted her teeth and endured the sting, which soon faded away.

After Scarlett said she was fine, Vincent didn’t press further.

With a few efficient movements, Scarlett finished ironing the shirt and turned off the iron.

She laid the shirt down neatly and said to Vincent, “It’s done.”

Without waiting for a reply, she turned and walked straight out of the bedroom, wanting nothing more than to put distance between them.

Vincent removed his bathrobe and put on the freshly ironed shirt. Just as Scarlett reached the door, he called out, “You should stay here at Ravenshade Villa for the next few days.”

Scarlett stopped in her tracks. Without a second thought, she refused flatly, “That won’t be necessary. I have my own place.”

Unaware that Sabrina wasn’t currently staying at Ravenshade Villa, her words carried an unintended sharpness, born from years of feeling like an outsider in what was supposed to be her home.

Vincent noticed the edge in her tone but chose not to argue. Instead, he took a different approach.

He looked at her retreating figure and said, “Ravenshade Villa is your home too.”

Scarlett let out a short, bitter laugh. “Is it, really?”

Was Ravenshade Villa truly her home? The question echoed painfully in her mind.

Perhaps it had been once, but not anymore.

Ever since Sabrina had moved in, Scarlett no longer felt like the lady of the house. Every corner of the villa seemed to remind her of her displaced status.

Vincent didn’t respond to her bitter retort. Instead, he simply stated, “Vanessa needs you.”

Scarlett instinctively refused again. “Vincent, I have my own work commitments. I can’t spend every waking moment looking after Vanessa.”

Vincent looked directly at her and said, “I have work too. If you don’t take care of Vanessa, who will?”

Scarlett felt her temper flare. She spun around and glared at Vincent. “Then let Sabrina-”

She had been about to say, “Let Sabrina do it,” but Vincent cut her off before she could finish. “Sabrina has gone to visit her family. She won’t be back for some time.”

Hearing this, Scarlett fell silent. The pieces suddenly clicked into place.

Now everything made sense-why Vincent had called her to take Vanessa to school that morning, why he had asked her to iron his shirt, why he wanted her to stay at Ravenshade Villa.

It was all clear now.

With Sabrina away, they needed her. That was the only reason he wanted her back.

Scarlett found it both laughable and heartbreaking. She didn’t have the energy to argue with Vincent anymore, nor did she want to say another word. She simply turned and went downstairs alone, the weight of his words settling heavily on her shoulders.

That afternoon, around five o’clock, Scarlett was at work but couldn’t focus at all.

Vincent’s words from that morning kept echoing in her mind. “If you don’t take care of Vanessa, who will?”

School would be out soon. If no one picked Vanessa up, she would be heartbroken, wouldn’t she? The image of Vanessa waiting alone filled her with dread.

The thought gnawed at her. Eventually, Scarlett asked Spencer for permission to leave early and drove straight to the kindergarten.

When she arrived, most of the children had already been picked up. Only a few remained, waiting for their parents. Vanessa was among them, looking small and forlorn.

When Vanessa saw Scarlett, her eyes welled up with tears.

“Mommy, I thought you forgot about me. I thought no one was coming.”

There she was, a little girl with her backpack still on, crying as if her world had ended.

Scarlett had carried Vanessa for nine months and had nearly died giving birth to her. How could she not love her? The sight of Vanessa in tears tore at her heart.

At that moment, Scarlett’s heart ached with a sharp, twisting pain that took her breath away.

She bent down, scooped Vanessa into her arms, comforted her gently, and carried her to the car, whispering reassurances all the way home.
