Thomas shifted his gaze from Daniel to Sabrina’s face. Her eyes were slightly red, as if she had been crying. She looked delicate and fragile-not at all like someone cut out for the rigorous demands of the medical field.
Seeing her like this seemed to irritate Thomas further.
He turned back to Sabrina, his words sharp and to the point. “Picking a research topic’s the very first thing any PhD student has to nail down. If you can’t even get that right, forget about finishing your dissertation-you’ll never make it. Studying medicine isn’t just about staying focused, you know? It means putting up with long, lonely hours-solitude that most people can’t stand. But you? You’re always running around with a bunch of people tagging along. Let’s be real-you’re not cut out for this field. You’d be better off finding someone to marry and settling down sooner rather than later.”
Tears streamed more heavily down Sabrina’s cheeks. She kept her head lowered, not daring to look at Thomas or Vincent.
Seeing her silence, Thomas called her by her full name. “Sabrina Monroe, do you think what I’m saying is correct?”
She still didn’t look up, merely giving a slight nod.
Thomas smiled faintly at that, then turned his gaze to Vincent, who had remained silent throughout. “Mr. Stewart, what about you? Do you think I’m right?”
Vincent leaned back in his chair, appearing casual and relaxed. When Thomas looked over, he met his gaze directly. In that moment, countless unspoken confrontations seemed to pass between them.
Instead of answering Thomas’ question, Vincent turned to Daniel. “Daniel, it seems Dr. Newman has no intention of dining with us. Please see him out.”
Daniel was taken aback. “Vincent…”
Vincent’s expression grew colder. “See him out.”
Sabrina had clearly been wronged by Thomas. With Daniel’s protective nature, even if Sabrina were at fault, he would still defend her. Yet Vincent remained unmoved-even asking for
Thomas to be escorted out.
Reluctantly, Daniel stood up.
But just as he rose, Thomas stood as well.

Thomas looked coldly at Daniel. “No need for the trouble, Mr. Lennox. But before I leave, I’d like to remind you-my student Nolan just saved your mom’s life. I may be what you call an ‘old fossil’, but in the medical field, as long as someone studies medicine, I have the right-and the responsibility-to offer my criticism.”
With that, Thomas picked up his briefcase indignantly and left the private room.
After Thomas departed, Daniel turned to Vincent discontentedly. “Vincent, does that old fossil not know who’s backing him? Without your funding, where would his precious labs be? How dare he speak to Sabrina like that—and to me!”
Daniel was furious, itching to chase after Thomas and confront him.
Beside them, Sabrina wept softly, her shoulders trembling.
The reason Vincent hadn’t defended Sabrina earlier was simple-Thomas wasn’t wrong.
But seeing her tears, he couldn’t remain indifferent. Under the table, he reached over and gently placed his hand on top of Sabrina’s.
At the same time, he looked up at Daniel. “Daniel, Thomas has the right to be proud. How many excellent doctors have studied under him? He’s not wrong. It was his student who saved Madeline.”
Daniel scoffed, brushing off the idea entirely. “Who cares? With our capital behind us, crushing them is just a matter of saying the word-no big deal.”
Vincent remained calm. “Do you really think we’re the only ones funding Thomas?”
Daniel was taken aback. From Vincent’s tone, it seemed Thomas had backers beyond just them.
Vincent didn’t specify who, but added, “Thomas isn’t someone we can easily touch.”
Daniel understood the implication-Thomas held a unique status that went beyond financial influence.
He stopped complaining.
But seeing Sabrina’s tears, Daniel couldn’t help saying, “Sabrina, if it really doesn’t work out, you don’t have to force yourself to stay in medicine.”
Sabrina, her eyes red-rimmed, shook her head. “No, I’ve put too much effort into getting where I am today. I don’t want to give up just like that.”
Vincent turned to look at her, his lips pressed slightly together. “Since you’re aware of your shortcomings, work hard to improve them.”
