Vincent seemed unmoved. “You’re the one who should feel regret,” he said flatly.

With that, he adjusted Vanessa in his arms and turned to leave.

Scarlett stood rooted to the spot, a wave of pain and dizziness washing over her so intensely her vision swam. Her legs gave way, and she crumpled to the cold linoleum floor.

Vanessa, peering over Vincent’s shoulder, saw the whole thing happen.

Vincent heard the soft thud and instinctively began to turn his head. But Vanessa suddenly piped up, her voice bright and distracting, “Daddy, can we get ice cream later?”

Vincent’s attention snapped back to his daughter. “Of course,” he said gently, his voice softening. “Anything you want.”

Out of the corner of her eye, fading into darkness, Scarlett watched their silhouettes disappear through the doorway. It felt as if her heart were being shredded.

Once, these two people had been her entire world.

Now, they were the source of her deepest hurt.

Lying on the unforgiving floor, a dark, weary thought whispered that maybe it would be easier not to get up at all.

She fell into a long, troubled dream. In it, Vincent and Vanessa were searching for her, their faces etched with remorse.

Vincent pleaded, “I was wrong. Please, just forgive me this once. From now on, you’ll be the only one.”

Vanessa cried, “Mommy, I’m sorry! I’ll be good, I promise! I’ll listen to everything you say!”

But dreams, however poignant, must end. Scarlett fought her way back to consciousness.

The first things she registered were the stark white ceiling tiles and the steady, electronic beep of a heart monitor.

Then, a figure leaned into her field of view.

Scarlett turned her head slowly. It was Damian.

He was watching her with naked concern. When he spoke, his voice was rough. “You’re awake.”

Scarlett frowned, a flicker of her old spirit returning. “Who asked you to do that? What if you’d hurt yourself again?” The words were out before she could think.

Immediately, she regretted them. Why did she say something that sounded so… caring?

But Damian’s smile widened into a full grin. “Are you worried about me, Scarlett?”

Flustered, Scarlett looked away, focusing on the window. “I need to get home.”

Damian’s expression softened. “Scarlett,” he said, his voice low and sincere, “from now on, wherever I am, that can be your home.”

A flush crept up Scarlett’s neck. Just then, a soft, deliberate cough came from elsewhere in the

room.

The sound made Scarlett start.

She turned her head further and saw Ruth propped up in the other hospital bed, watching them with an amused, warm smile.

“Well, hello there,” Ruth said, her voice still a bit weak but cheerful. “I’m Damian’s mother, Ruth.”

Scarlett’s nerves returned. “Hello, Mrs. Langley.”

“Oh, just Ruth is fine,” she said, her eyes twinkling as she looked Scarlett over. “My goodness, you’re even prettier than he said. What a lovely girl.”

Scarlett wasn’t used to such open, generous praise. It was unexpectedly disarming.

Still, what woman didn’t appreciate a kind word? A faint, genuine smile touched Scarlett’s lips. “Thank you.”

Ruth waved a dismissive hand. “No need for thanks. And no need for such formality either. We’ll be family soon enough.”

Scarlett, thoroughly flustered now, shot a look at Damian.

Seeing her glance, Damian shrugged, playing innocent. “I may have mentioned you. Just in passing.”

Scarlett glared at him, but he just kept smiling, unfazed.
