As she approached, Vincent instinctively stepped aside. When she passed by him, the faint, clean scent of her shampoo or soap-something subtly fresh-lingered for a second in the air.
For a fleeting moment, it caught him off guard.
In all their years together, he’d been around that scent countless times.
But only now did it strike him, quietly, almost disorientingly so.
Scarlett exited the stairwell first, with Vincent following a few paces behind.
They walked back together toward Sabrina’s room.
Vincent deliberately matched his steps to hers, walking beside her rather than ahead.
When they reached the doorway, Scarlett stopped and didn’t go in.
Seeing her hesitate, Vincent didn’t insist.
Once inside, Vincent first checked on Sabrina. Seeing she was asleep, he turned to Vanessa and said in a low voice, “Vanessa, it’s time for us to go home.”
Hearing this, Vanessa immediately grew agitated. “No!” she protested, her voice rising. “I’m not going! I’m staying here with Sabrina!”
Vincent tried to reason with her gently. “Be a good girl. I’ll have Freya come stay with Sabrina tonight.”
Vanessa turned her face away stubbornly. “I don’t want Freya. I want to take care of Sabrina myself.”
incent’s expression darkened. He lowered his voice further. “I’ll ask one more time. Are you
ming home or not?”
Vanessa stood her ground. “I’m not going.”
“Fine,” Vincent said, his tone final. “Then your mother and I will go ahead. I’ll send Freya over later to stay with you and Sabrina.”
With that, he turned and walked out of the room.

Vanessa’s eyes followed his retreating figure. She was sure her daddy wouldn’t really leave her here alone.
But Vincent didn’t look back, and soon he was out the door.
Watching him go, Vanessa’s
welled up eyes
with
angry, hurt tears.
Daddy loves me so much. He wouldn’t really leave me here by myself… would he?
So she waited. And waited. But Vincent didn’t come back.
After more than half an hour passed, it finally sank in that he really wasn’t returning.
The realization filled her with a hot, furious sense of betrayal. She snatched the plastic water cup from the bedside table and threw it hard against the wall. “It’s all that mean Mommy’s fault!” she shouted, her voice trembling with rage. “She took Daddy away! Mean Mommy! I hate her!”
The noise was loud enough to wake Sabrina.
Seeing Sabrina stir, Vanessa hurried over, her anger shifting briefly to concern. “Sabrina, you’re awake? Did I wake you up?”
Sabrina looked at Vanessa’s tear-streaked, flushed face. She felt no sympathy-only a sharp, impatient urge to slap the child.
Finally having managed to fall asleep, only to be jolted awake by Vanessa’s tantrum.
She was both irritated and exhausted.
But after a moment, she swallowed her irritation. She didn’t smile, her voice low and strained as she asked, “Where’s your father?”
Vanessa pouted, the unhappiness clear on her face. “He left. With her.”
aring this, Sabrina frowned, a thread of anxiety tightening in her chest. “Did he
be back?”

Vanessa shook her head. “No. But he said he’d send Freya to look after you.”
Sabrina lapsed into a worried silence, barely hearing Vanessa’s words.
Seeing Sabrina upset, Vanessa quickly added, “Don’t worry, Sabrina. I’ll stay with you.”
Sabrina didn’t feel like responding. She just gave a faint, absent nod.
