Scarlett and Vincent were halfway through breakfast when Sabrina suddenly appeared at the top of the stairs, calling out anxiously, “Vincent, I think Vanessa’s running a fever again!”
Hearing that, Scarlett and Vincent both stood up at almost the same time.
Upstairs, Scarlett had Lily bring a thermometer, which she placed gently under Vanessa’s arm.
Sabrina sat on the edge of the bed, her injured leg’extended, holding Vanessa in her lap.
The sight took Scarlett back to her own past-days when, even burning up with fever herself, she would drag herself out of bed to cook for Vanessa, change her, care for her.
Vincent, too, had taken a seat beside the bed, reaching out to feel Vanessa’s forehead.
He and Sabrina sat close together on the bedside, Vanessa cradled between them.
They looked for all the world like a perfect family of three.
Scarlett stood in front of the bed, feeling more like an observer than a participant.
But she was used to this.
The temperature reading came back normal. No fever.
Hearing Scarlett say there was no fever, Vanessa began to cry again, telling Vincent, “Daddy, my tummy hurts.”
Scarlett understood immediately.
Vanessa wasn’t sick-she simply didn’t want to go to preschool and was putting on an act.
As her mother, she saw right through it.
Vanessa looked up at Vincent with tear-filled eyes, a picture of pitiful distress.
Vincent’s face softened with concern.
Sabrina held her closer, pressing a hand worriedly against her stomach. “Show me where it hurts, sweetie. Here? Or here?”

Vanessa didn’t answer, just kept crying.
Seeing her in such apparent pain, Vincent quickly asked Lily to bring some children’s medicine.
Once it arrived, he carefully helped Vanessa take it.

After she swallowed, Vincent looked at her-her forehead damp with sweat, strands of hair sticking to her cheeks. He brushed them aside, his thumb gently stroking her face. “If you’re not feeling well, you can stay home from preschool today.”
Scarlett stood in the room, feeling utterly superfluous from start to finish.
Hearing Vincent’s words, her heart sank.
Wasn’t this exactly what Vanessa had been fussing to hear?
Scarlett lowered her eyes, a bitter, quiet laugh escaping her.
She remembered Vincent coming for her earlier, saying they would take Vanessa to school together.
At that moment, Scarlett had thought-since she so rarely took Vanessa to preschool-she should dress carefully, so that if other parents asked, Vanessa wouldn’t feel embarrassed to introduce her.
She understood how a child’s mind worked.
She just hadn’t expected her careful preparations that morning to go to waste.
Scarlett knew Vanessa was pretending, but seeing Vincent and Sabrina completely taken in, she no longer wanted to stay.
After a moment, she turned and left the room.
Downstairs, she finished her breakfast quietly.
Just as she was done, Vincent came down.
He walked to the dining area and sat beside her.
Seeing Scarlett had finished, Vincent didn’t say much, only spoke to her softly, “Come to the office with me later.”
She had gotten up early and dressed so carefully-it seemed a shame not to take her out.
