Scarlett and Claire arrived at the station, told the officer at the front desk why they were there, and were told to wait.
About ten minutes later, a female officer escorted them out of the building.
They took a department vehicle to the detention center.
Elias had already been arrested, but his trial hadn’t started yet.
He wanted to see Claire now, and it wasn’t hard to guess what he was going to say.
But Claire had agreed to go.
Scarlett knew Claire well enough to understand: Claire wanted to see him one last time.
That was why she’d come with her.
The officer led them through the building, and soon they were in the visiting area.
Scarlett went in with Claire to see Elias.
In just a few days, the cocky man she remembered had become someone else—his face unshaven, his eyes bloodshot and hollow.
When he saw Claire, Elias‘ expression shifted. He pressed his palm against the glass, his eyes red.
His voice came through rough and cracked. “Claire.”
Claire looked at him through the partition. When their eyes met, a wave of grief moved through her.
She had once imagined, so many times, marrying this man. Having two kids with him. Growing old in some quiet, uneventful life.
And now the man she’d loved that much was on the other side of the glass.
She pushed the ache down. “I came to see you. After this, we’re… never seeing each other again.”
Elias froze. He stared at her in disbelief. “You’re really gonna do this?”
Claire’s nose burned. “A crime is a crime.”
Elias couldn’t accept it. “I did what we’ve done a hundred times before. How is it a crime now?

What about all those other times? Were those crimes too?”

Claire smiled bitterly. “Let’s not talk about the past. I came tonight because of what we used to be. But once I walk out that door, you and I are done.”
The finality in her voice finally seemed to reach him.
When he was first brought in, he’d thought she was just trying to scare him.
But now, hearing the way she spoke, he realized she wasn’t joking.
Elias started to panic. “Claire. Tell me you’re not serious.”
Claire looked at him calmly, her face steady. “Elias. I’m not joking.”
At that, Elias slid down the glass until he was on his knees, his voice breaking. “Claire, you can’t do this. If you go through with it, what happens to me? Have you thought about that? Who’s gonna marry you? Who’s gonna take care of you?”
His words brought tears streaming down Claire’s face.
But her voice stayed even. “You were never going to marry me. Why say it now?”
Elias‘ face twisted. “No, Claire, I was. I told my family about you. I said I’d bring you home for Christmas. I told them you were a good person. That they’d love you. I…”
Claire cut him off. “That’s enough.”
Elias stopped. He looked at her and saw the finality in her eyes.
