Damian’s eyes narrowed slightly. His voice was flat. “The evidence is solid. What excuse could he possibly have?”

Scarlett didn’t have an answer. But she knew what Vincent was capable of.

If he wanted to protect someone, he’d find a way.

“He’s Vincent,” she said. “Nothing is ever that simple.”

Damian stood under the light. His face was pale, drained of color. He didn’t have the energy to argue. He just looked at her and said, “Don’t worry about this. I know what I’m doing.”

The words came out before she could stop them. “Damian. If I don’t worry about it, then who will…”

She didn’t finish.

She didn’t know where that had come from. But it was true-she was worried.

Whether Luke went to prison or not didn’t matter as much anymore. What mattered was that she was fine now.

If Damian pushed this, Vincent wouldn’t sit back.

If those two went head-to-head, no one would come out clean.

And Damian-he was already an outsider. She didn’t want him caught in this.

Damian caught the unfinished sentence. He frowned. “Finish what you were saying.”

Scarlett steadied herself. She looked at him. “Damian. Vincent isn’t Luke. He’s not going to let you walk all over him.”

Damian laughed softly. He shrugged. “That’s my problem.”

Scarlett gave a helpless exhale. She didn’t know what else to say.

He saw the worry written across her face. He leaned in slightly, eyes fixed on hers. “Are you worried about me?”

She turned her face away. “No.”

A small smile tugged at his mouth. “You are. Your eyes don’t lie.”

Scarlett scoffed. “I just don’t want you dragged into something that has nothing to do with My problems with the Stewarts-you’re not part of that.”

you.

Damian didn’t seem to hear her. He looked down at his shirt. The front was soaked through.

His wound was still throbbing. He let out a dramatic sigh. “Tch. Hurts so much. I’m probably bleeding out, aren’t I?”

As he spoke, he leaned his head against Scarlett’s shoulder. Awkwardly-he was tall, and the angle was strange. But he pressed into her anyway.

Careful not to get blood on her.

Hearing him say it hurt, Scarlett’s resolve cracked. She reached out to steady his arm. “Lie down on the bed.”

She guided him, and he took the opportunity to hold her cold hand.

She didn’t pull away.

Once Damian was sitting on the edge of the bed, Scarlett asked, “Where’s the first aid kit?”

He gestured toward the coffee table. “Bottom drawer.”

She pulled the blanket over him and went to find it.

As she rummaged through the drawer, her gaze caught on a photo frame on the table. She froze.

It was a picture of her.

College years. White dress. Sunlight on her face. Young and smiling.

Her chest tightened.

She’d forgotten this photo even existed. She never expected Damian had kept it all this time.

She carried the first aid kit back to his side. “Unbutton your shirt.”

Damian looked up at her. “It hurts. You do it.”

She saw the sweat on his forehead. Without a word, she reached out and undid the buttons.

A few quick movements, and she pulled the shirt open. The gauze underneath was completely soaked through. When she peeled it off, the wound underneath was long. Deep. Still seeping.

Scarlett’s eyes went red. She grabbed a large cotton pad, dipped it in antiseptic, and began to
