The family members by the hospital bed exchanged confused glances before one of them finally spoke up. "Oh, you mean the woman who was here before?"
Damian nodded quickly. "Yeah. Where is she?"
Before anyone could answer, the door opened and a nurse walked in.
Damian turned to her immediately. "Do you know where the patient from this room went?"
The nurse noticed the worry on his face and said, "She was discharged about an hour ago. She's probably home by now."
Damian's brow furrowed. "Discharged? How? She just had surgery."
The nurse gave him an odd look but answered anyway. "Her family came and picked her up."
Damian didn't wait to hear more. He turned and ran.
On the drive to Theron Manor, he called Scarlett over and over.
She didn't pick up once.
He kept calling anyway.
It wasn't until he pulled up in front of the gate that he finally stopped.
He got out and walked straight toward the entrance, his strides long and determined.
But before he could even knock, Nathan stepped out and blocked his path. "Go home. She doesn't want to see you."
Damian's voice came out urgent, almost pleading. "Nathan, please. Just let me see her for five minutes. I need to know she's okay. Then I'll leave."
He tried to step past him, but Nathan held his ground, pushing him back. "I'm not going to say it again."
Damian could see it in his face—he wasn't getting through that door tonight.
He craned his neck, trying to see past the gate into the yard, but the property was large, and all he could make out were trees and flower beds.
Nathan started to close the gate.
Just then, Violet hurried out. "Nathan, go sit with Scarlett. I'll talk to him."
Nathan glanced at her, seemed about to argue, then thought better of it and headed back inside.
