No Second Baby No You Only Divorce (Scarlett and Vincent) novel Chapter 625

Hearing that, Scarlett's immediate reaction was disbelief. "No way. Nathan would never say something like that."

In her mind, Nathan had always warned her against getting involved with someone from a family far wealthier than theirs.

His reasoning had always been clear—he wouldn't have the leverage to go up against them if things went south, wouldn't be able to protect her.

She still remembered those words vividly. During her marriage to Vincent, she'd thought about them more times than she could count.

So she was certain. Nathan wouldn't just hand her over to Damian like that.

Damian held his ground. "It's true."

She shot back, "You're making that up."

He didn't want to argue. Instead, he just pulled her closer, his voice soft and warm. "Does it really matter if he said it or not? Either way, you're going to marry me."

Scarlett didn't know how to respond to that. So she did the only thing she could think of—she changed the subject. "Damian, I'm tired. I want to sleep."

He knew exactly what she was doing, but he didn't push. He loosened his hold on her carefully. "Can I at least sleep on the couch tonight?"

His voice had this pitiful edge to it, like he was genuinely asking for permission.

Her heart softened despite herself. "Fine."

Hearing that, Damian gently lifted her and set her back on the bed. Then he crouched down in front of her, close. He'd had a bit to drink, and his eyes had that slightly unfocused look. "Thanks, babe."

The word hit her harder than she expected.

She turned her face away, not daring to meet his gaze.

But Damian leaned in anyway, brushing his lips against her earlobe, then lingering there for just a second.

When he finally pulled back, he said, "Babe, I promise—next time I drink, I won't end up in your bed. Don't be mad."

Scarlett was even more flustered now, not sure what to say.

When she stayed quiet, he took her hand and gave it a little shake. "Okay?"

She tried to pull away. "Damian, I'm not a kid. Stop it."

He just buried his face in her lap. "So is it okay or not?"

Helpless, she gave in. "Fine."

At that, the corner of his mouth curled up.

The alcohol had loosened something in him—or maybe it just gave him an excuse to let down his guard.

He smelled like wine and asked if he could shower.
