No Second Baby No You Only Divorce (Scarlett and Vincent) novel Chapter 663

Nathan straightened up and moved aside, speaking quietly to Scarlett. "Stay with her for a while."

Scarlett took the seat beside the hospital bed and gave a slight nod. "Alright."

Seeing Vanessa still hadn't woken, Nathan slowly stepped out of the room.

Scarlett remained by the bedside, looking down at Vanessa's sweat-damp face. It pained her to see the girl like that, so she reached over and gently brushed the damp strands of hair away from her forehead.

Almost without thinking, she let her hand rest softly on top of Vanessa's head.

A heavy sense of sadness settled in her chest just then.

Remembering how things used to be, Scarlett felt a deep ache inside.

Vanessa had always been such a sweet kid.

Scarlett's eyes stung again with held-back tears.

Not wanting to risk waking her, Scarlett pulled her hand back and let it rest in her lap.

She stayed there quietly watching over Vanessa for a few more minutes. Then, recalling the rest of the family was still waiting outside, she rose slowly and walked out of the room.

When she opened the door, the first thing Scarlett noticed was Nathan and Violet seated side by side on the bench, leaning into one another. Damian wasn't with them.

She glanced to the side and spotted him further down the hallway—looking right at her with a playful, knowing smirk.

He grinned in her direction, though maybe because Nathan and Violet were nearby, he didn't voice any of his usual flirtatious remarks.

Scarlett paused briefly before addressing Nathan and Violet. "Vanessa's fever might spike again later. Why don't you two head home for now? I'll be fine staying here by myself."

Violet didn't seem convinced. She frowned, concern clear in her voice. "Are you sure you'll be okay alone? I really don't mind staying with you."

Scarlett shook her head. "You've had a long day too, Violet. You should get some rest. Lily and I can handle things here."

Violet still hesitated. "But—"

Before she could continue, Damian chimed in smoothly. "Don't worry, Violet. I'll keep her company."

Violet wavered. "Well..."

She let the word hang, neither agreeing nor refusing outright, and instead looked toward Nathan.

She was fine with Damian staying, but she wondered how Nathan would feel about it.

Nathan caught her silent question. After a brief moment of consideration, he relented. "Alright, let's go home."

Violet stood up but still turned to Scarlett. "If anything changes, promise you'll call us right away."

Scarlett assured her, "I will."

Once Nathan and Violet had disappeared through the ER doors, Scarlett turned back to Damian. She kept her voice low. "You should head home too."

Thinking it over, Lily found she didn't really mind what Scarlett was doing.

After all, Vincent had been living with Sabrina at Ravenshade Villa for quite some time now. Why shouldn't Scarlett live as she pleased?

Just then, Vanessa broke into a sudden, sharp cry. "Waaah—!"

The sound startled Lily and made Scarlett jump by the doorway.

She pulled back from Damian's shadow and hurried back into the room, her steps slightly uneven.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, she gathered Vanessa into her arms and held her close. "What's wrong, sweetheart?"

Vanessa buried her face in Scarlett's neck, tearful and sweaty. "Mommy, my throat hurts."

Scarlett pressed her forehead gently to Vanessa's. "Are you still going to beg for ice cream after this?"

She knew Vanessa all too well—the girl had a serious sweet tooth, and ice cream was her favorite.

Scarlett couldn't say for sure that the cold was entirely because of ice cream, but it had definitely played a part.

Tears rolled down Vanessa's cheeks like little beads. Her voice came out scratchy and weak. "I won't ask for it anymore."

She was being so earnest and well-behaved that Scarlett's heart ached with tenderness.
