Damian let out a low chuckle at that. "Your aunt has me to look out for her. She doesn't need anybody else."

It took Clara a second to catch on. "Oh, right! You're really strong, Damian. Keeping Auntie safe would be easy for you."

Seeing how earnest she was, Damian couldn't help but smile and pat the space beside him on the bed. "Come on up here, Clara. I'll keep you company for a little while."

Without hesitation, Clara climbed onto the bed.

Scarlett watched them, a note of concern in her voice. "Clara, sweetie, remember Damian's hurt. Try not to bump him, okay?"

Clara pouted, crossing her arms. "Hmph. Auntie cares more about Uncle now. You're not worried about me anymore."

Scarlett fell silent, unsure how to reply.

Damian turned his head toward her, a teasing grin spreading across his face. "What's this? Worried about me?"

Scarlett avoided his gaze and slipped off the bed.

"I'll go tell the staff to bring some food up," she said, smoothing her clothes.

Damian noted she wasn't trying to dodge the question. Testing the waters, he asked, "Not worried someone might see me here?"

The grin on his face only widened.

Scarlett shot him a look. "Just rest, will you? Do you always have to talk so much?"

Even as she scolded him, a warm feeling settled in her chest.

Seeing her put on that pretend-stern expression, Damian played along obediently. "All right, all right. I'll behave."

As Scarlett stepped out of the bedroom, she nearly ran into Nathan. He was standing by the staircase, a lit cigarette between his fingers.

Hearing the door open, he glanced over instinctively. His expression was tense, clouded with something uneasy.

Sensing something was off, Scarlett approached him cautiously.

She stopped about an arm's length away and looked up at him. "Nathan."

Nathan tapped his cigarette, letting the ash fall. When he turned fully toward her, his face was lined with worry.

"You saw the news, didn't you?"

The moment he said "the news", Scarlett knew exactly what he meant.

She nodded quietly. "Yes, I saw it."
