After confirming he hadn't misheard, Vincent glanced sharply up toward Scarlett's bedroom window. Seeing the lights still off, he raised his voice toward the second floor, "Scarlett—Vanessa took a bad fall and fractured a bone. She's at the hospital right now, and it could be serious. If you want to see her, come down now. I'll be waiting out front."
By the time he finished calling up to her, Vincent had already ended the call with Lily.
But even after his shouts, Theron Manor remained still and silent.
Vincent stood with his phone in hand, waiting several long minutes, but there was no response from Scarlett.
He tried again, louder this time, "Scarlett, did you hear what I said?"
Again, only quiet answered him.
Anxious about Vanessa, Vincent couldn't wait any longer. He turned, got into his car, and sped off toward the hospital.
Upstairs, both Scarlett and Damian had clearly heard Vincent shouting from the driveway—and later, the sound of his car pulling away.
Scarlett hadn't uttered a word through it all.
After a stretch of quiet, Damian finally remarked dismissively, "What a performance."
But just as he finished speaking, Scarlett said softly, "Damian... I want to go see Vanessa."
Damian paused. Even though he was sure Vincent's story was mostly fabricated, he softened at Scarlett's tone. "Then I'll come with you."
Scarlett shifted out of Damian's arms and sat up. In the dim light, she could just make out the outline of his face. "No," she said quietly. "I should go alone."
Vanessa was her daughter. This was her responsibility, not Damian's.
She began to get up, but Damian sat up too, quickly catching her hand. "Why won't you let me come?"
Scarlett gently pulled her hand free. "This is my family matter. It doesn't involve you."
But Damian took her arm again, his grip firm. "If it involves you, it involves me. I'm coming."
Moonlight fell across Damian's face through the window, revealing an expression that was earnest and unyielding. He didn't seem to be bluffing at all.
Looking at him, Scarlett felt something flutter softly inside her chest.
A few moments later, she settled back against the pillow. "Never mind," she whispered. "I'm not going after all."
Now that she thought about it, Vincent's story didn't add up.
