She uttered two words in a voice so faint it was almost lost to the air.
Damian didn't catch them at all.
Seeing that Scarlett was clearly drunk and uncomfortable, he kept his tone patient. "Let's walk just a little farther, then we'll head back. Okay?"
Scarlett gave a slow nod. "Okay, I—" she began, then trailed off without finishing.
Damian had no clue what she'd been about to say. He simply took it as her agreeing to walk a bit more.
So the two of them trudged on, leaving uneven footprints in the fresh snow.
When they reached a street corner, Damian paused. He turned toward Scarlett, his expression serious. "Ready to turn back now?"
Scarlett was being cooperative. She nodded again and murmured, "Okay."
Damian took her hand and led her back toward where his car was parked.
He opened the passenger door, helped her inside, and leaned across to buckle her seatbelt. As he did, he couldn't resist lifting his gaze and brushing a light kiss against the corner of her mouth.
Afterward, he gently ruffled her hair.
Scarlett fell asleep almost as soon as the car started moving. She stayed quiet the whole ride—no fuss, no sickness—and didn't stir until the engine cut off.
Instead of taking her back to Theron Manor, Damian drove straight to his own villa.
But not wanting Nathan and the rest of the family to worry, he placed a call.
At first, Nathan wasn't on board with the idea of Scarlett spending the night away. But after a quick video call where he saw just how out of it she was, he reluctantly gave in.
Before hanging up, Nathan made sure to add, "Damian, you haven't passed our family's approval yet. You'd better keep your hands to yourself tonight."
Uncharacteristically earnest, Damian replied, "Don't worry, Nathan. I won't lay a finger on her unless Scarlett says it's okay."
Nathan didn't respond. He just ended the call abruptly.
After tucking his phone away, Damian returned to the car to carry Scarlett inside.
Even though he moved carefully, she still blinked her eyes open.
For a second she just stared at him, dazed and half-awake, before asking, "Where are we?"
"My place," Damian answered, adjusting his hold on her as he carried her through the front door.
Scarlett's head was throbbing. She closed her eyes again and let herself be carried.
Damian didn't stop in the hallway. He went straight up the stairs with her in his arms.
On the second floor, he carried her directly into his bedroom.
His room wasn't decorated like a typical girl's space, full of color and frills. The palette here was muted and simple—sheets and pillowcases in light gray, everything else in clean blacks and whites.
