Nolan paid no heed to Damian’s provocations-his attention remained fixed solely on Scarlett.
Scarlett met his gaze and finally spoke softly, “Nolan, you should go home and get some rest now.”
Nolan’s expression was full of concern. “But what if they come back?”
A faint, weary smile touched Scarlett’s lips. “I know Vincent. Once he’s made an exit, he won’t return.”
Seeing her determination, Nolan had no choice but to relent. If Scarlett didn’t wish for him to stay, he couldn’t very well force his presence.
Moreover, it was indeed improper for an unmarried man and woman to remain alone together so late at night.
In the end, both Damian and Nolan departed together, leaving Scarlett in the suddenly quiet room.
Scarlett sank onto the small couch, sitting in stillness for a long time, unable to dispel the deep sense of unease coiling in her heart.
Vincent’s cold threat before he left echoed in her mind. She knew him all too well-he was a man who always followed through on his words.

In the car, Daniel couldn’t let the matter rest.
“Vincent, are you really just going to let this slide?” he pressed, his voice tight with frustration.
Vincent sat in the passenger seat, his demeanor as unreadably calm as ever. His reply was flat. “Yes.”
Daniel was exasperated. “Come on. Are you really going to let Scarlett make a fool of you-not just once, but twice now?”
Vincent stared out the window at the passing darkness, a cigarette held loosely between his fingers. The burning tip glowed a fierce red in the night.
His face was mostly obscured by shadow, and his voice was barely a murmur. “She is Vanessa’s mother. Vanessa needs her.”
This only frustrated Daniel further. “Vincent, what’s so lacking about Sabrina? If you have Sabrina, why do you still need Scarlett in the picture?”
Vincent was silent for a long moment, the only sound the hum of the engine. Finally, he answered, “She is the one who carried and gave birth to Vanessa.”
“So you’re just going to swallow your pride? Accept this humiliation?”
Vincent’s voice remained even, devoid of emotion. “I only want what is best for Vanessa’s well-being.”
That was the rationale he voiced aloud. Yet, somewhere deep within, a dissonant note vibrated-a feeling that this explanation wasn’t the entire truth, that something else was unsettled within him, though he

Daniel let out a long, resigned sigh. He knew Vincent well enough to understand that further argument was futile, so he let the subject drop.
The next morning, after the previous night’s drama, Killian called Scarlett early.
“Scarlett, you can return to your position at the main hospital now,” he informed her.
Scarlett was in the middle of seeing patients at the small rural clinic when she received the call. Surprisingly, she felt little emotion-no relief, no joy.
For a brief moment, she considered asking him outright. “Who is it that gave the order to send me away? And who is it that now grants me permission to return?” But the questions died on her lips before they could be spoken.
There seemed little point in seeking answers anymore.
She couldn’t abandon her patients mid-shift, so Scarlett didn’t immediately depart for Rivergate that day.
That evening, Clara called her.
They engaged in light, cheerful chatter initially, but when a housemaid entered to tell Clara it was time for her bath, Scarlett finally asked, “Clara, where is your mom?”
Clara’s voice took on a slight pout. “Mom got a phone call during dinner. I think the brand she was supposed to endorse gave the deal to someone else at the last minute. She left in such a hurry she didn’t even finish her meal.”
A wave of foreboding washed over Scarlett. “And your dad?”
Clara replied, “Dad hasn’t come home all day.”
Remembering Vincent’s cold threat, Scarlett’s anxiety intensified.
Both Violet and Nathan adored their daughter. Even during their busiest periods, at least one of them would typically be home to spend the evening with her.
But tonight, neither parent was present. Something was definitely wrong.
“Auntie, I have to go take my bath now,” Clara said. “I’ll call you again tomorrow.”
Scarlett murmured a distracted goodbye and ended the call.
Her eyes fell upon
her half-packed suitcase sitting in the corner. She knew then that she could no longer
afford to wait.
She immediately called Nolan, and the two of them drove through the night to return to Rivergate.
Upon their arrival, Nolan dropped Scarlett off at the gates of Theron Manor.
Henry and Diana, seeing Nolan, warmly invited him in for a late-night snack, but Scarlett gently declined on his behalf. “Dad, Mom, Nolan needs to get proper rest. It’s very late already; we shouldn’t keep him.”
