Scarlett laughed softly before replying, "Nolan, it's me. I'm outside your place."
Nolan had only just gotten out of bed.
He hadn't even had time to wash up yet. His hair was messy, and he was still wearing lounge clothes when he heard her words. The second he realized she was outside, he rushed toward the bathroom while hurriedly saying into the phone, "Okay, hold on. I'll be right there."
Inside the bathroom, Nolan quickly fixed his hair in the mirror.
He had planned to brush his teeth too, but when he noticed the snow still falling outside, he immediately worried Scarlett would get cold waiting for him.
So he grabbed a thick coat and rushed downstairs instead.
The moment he reached the front gate, he saw Scarlett standing outside in the snow.
A pale scarf was wrapped around her neck, a knit beanie covered most of her hair, and gloves hid her hands from the cold. From where he stood, all he could really see were her eyes.
Nolan stopped walking completely.
He just stood there staring at her in silence.
Scarlett looked up at him and smiled. "Long time no see, Nolan."
Seeing the cold flush on her cheeks, Nolan immediately opened the gate and walked toward her. Without hesitation, he draped the thick coat over her shoulders before asking with obvious concern, "Are you freezing out here?"
The tip of Scarlett's nose had already turned red from the cold, and soft clouds of breath escaped her lips as she smiled up at him. "Thanks, Nolan. I'm okay."
Even after hearing that, Nolan still pulled the coat more securely around her shoulders. "Keep it on anyway. It'll help."
Scarlett stopped arguing and nodded with a smile. "Okay. Thanks."
Instinctively, Nolan reached toward her hand, wanting to hold it.
But the moment his fingertips barely brushed the back of her glove, he suddenly pulled his hand back like he had crossed a line he wasn't allowed to touch anymore.
In the end, he only gave her a quiet smile and said, "Come inside. I'll make you something warm to eat."
Scarlett smiled brightly. "Sounds good."
After bringing her inside, Nolan settled her onto the couch, handed her a pillow, and poured her a mug of water.
Only after making sure she was comfortable did he say, "I'll go make breakfast."
But just as he turned toward the kitchen, Scarlett quickly stopped him.
"Nolan, sit down for a minute. There's something I want to talk to you about."
Nolan turned back toward her slowly, and the warmth in his eyes faded almost instantly.
Scarlett looked at him carefully then, finally noticing how much weight he had lost recently. His cheeks had become noticeably thinner, and his complexion looked exhausted.
Nolan could already guess why she had come.
Even though he clearly didn't want to hear it, he still walked back over and sat down anyway.
Looking at his worn expression, Scarlett asked softly, "How have you been lately?"
Nolan forced a smile onto his face as he looked at her. "I've been okay."
