Scarlett looked at him in confusion. "Finally came in?"

Thomas smiled faintly. "To be honest, someone didn't want me giving this to you. But you're talented, and I wanted you as my student."

Scarlett frowned slightly before carefully asking, "Was it Vincent?"

Thomas sat across from her beneath the warm restaurant lighting, his graying hair making the exhaustion on his face even more obvious. Hearing her question, he frowned too.

After a brief silence, he answered honestly. "I'm not completely sure, but he did pull his investment from the lab."

The moment he mentioned it, the fatigue on his face became even more obvious.

Still, after another thought, he smiled again and said, "It's not a huge problem. We still have state funding backing us, so no matter what happens, the lab isn't going under."

Instead of feeling relieved, Scarlett only grew more uneasy.

Looking at him worriedly, she asked, "Mr. Newman, is this going to affect you?"

Thomas shrugged casually. "What's there to worry about? Your grades and research speak for themselves."

Hearing that, Scarlett forced a small smile even though the anxiety in her chest refused to fade. "Thank you, Mr. Newman."

Once the food arrived, Scarlett barely touched her meal.

Her thoughts stayed fixed on the acceptance letter sitting beside her.

If Vincent really had interfered, and Thomas still chose to give her the offer anyway, then Thomas would definitely be dragged into the fallout because of her.

The more she thought about it, the more unsettled she became.

Halfway through dinner, she turned to look at the acceptance packet again.

It was something she had wanted for so long, but now that she finally had it in her hands, she couldn't feel happy at all.

The restaurant was crowded and noisy, so she couldn't hear who was calling.

She set down her fork and looked quietly toward Thomas.

After a long pause, he finally said, "Alright, I understand. I'll head over now."

The second the call ended, Thomas stood up quickly while grabbing his briefcase. "Come with me. We need to go to the hospital."

Scarlett picked up the acceptance packet and stood as well. "What happened, Mr. Newman?"

Thomas slipped on his coat and answered grimly, "Nolan collapsed. They already admitted him, and after the tests came back, several blood levels were seriously abnormal."

Scarlett's brows immediately tightened. "What are the doctors saying?"
