Remembering there was still something important he needed to deal with, Vincent headed into the study and called Abbott.
The call connected almost immediately.
"Mr. Stewart."
Vincent skipped the small talk.
"How's the investigation coming?"
Abbott answered promptly. "We tracked it down. Damian does have someone inside Stewart Group."
The news didn't surprise Vincent at all.
After all, he had people inside Damian's company too.
After a brief silence, Vincent spoke calmly. "Don't spook anyone yet. Leak a little valuable information and watch how Damian reacts. Once we figure out his next move, we can box him in."
"Understood."
After hanging up, Vincent lit a cigarette.
Smoke drifted slowly through the study while his thoughts wandered elsewhere.
If he wanted to drag the Theron family into this mess, Damian had to fall first.
Otherwise, no matter how much Vincent did, it would all end in nothing.
...
By seven that evening, Theron Manor already felt wrapped in nighttime quiet.
Winter had pushed darkness over the estate before five o'clock, and now the house carried the stillness of midnight.
Scarlett sat curled into the living room couch, but every few moments her eyes drifted toward the windows.
When Damian left that morning, he'd said he would come by tonight.
But it was already late, and he still hadn't shown up.
Thinking back to how uneasy he'd looked before leaving, Scarlett couldn't stop herself from wondering if something had happened.
She'd grown so used to Damian constantly coming and going around Theron Manor that his sudden absence left an uncomfortable emptiness in the house.
After hesitating for a while, she finally picked up her phone and called him.
The line connected quickly.
"What's wrong, sweetheart? Missing me already?"
His lazy, teasing tone sounded exactly the same as always.
The second Scarlett heard his voice, the anxiety in her chest eased a little.
A few seconds later, she asked softly, "What are you doing?"
Damian immediately caught the concern hidden underneath the question, and his tone became more serious.
"You worried about me?"
Scarlett fell silent briefly before quietly admitting, "Yeah."
A low laugh came from the other end of the call.
"Don't worry. I'm still at the office. Looks like I probably won't make it over tonight, so don't wait up for me. If you're tired, go ahead and sleep."
Hearing that, Scarlett quickly said, "It's still early. I was thinking about stopping by the hospital."
Damian didn't stop her, though his voice softened carefully.
"Then head home early?"
"I'm not sure how long I'll stay."
Damian leaned back in his chair and rubbed his forehead before finally saying, "Scarlett, there's still a line between a man and a woman, especially when the guy clearly has feelings for you. Honestly, I don't even want you going over there. You know that, right?"
Scarlett quietly fell silent again.
Damian knew she understood him, so his voice gentled further.
