Damian never took his eyes off Scarlett and shook his head slowly. "I've never once been upset with you."
He dropped his gaze, no longer meeting her eyes as he went on talking. "I only hate myself."
He hated that he'd stepped aside and let Vincent have her.
Scarlett sniffled softly. "I thought you were furious at me."
Damian lifted his head to stare at her again, staying quiet for a long stretch without a single word.
Growing uneasy under his fixed gaze, Scarlett turned her face away. "W-what's wrong?"
Damian squeezed her hand tight. "You still haven't given me your answer."
It took Scarlett a moment to catch on to what he meant. After a short pause, she sighed and yielded. "Alright, go ahead."
His tone carried domineering firmness, laced with faint pleading underneath as he spoke, "You can't fall for him anymore, and never let him get close to you again."
Scarlett froze, lost for any reply.
She stared blankly at Damian. To outsiders, he was the privileged heir of the Langley fortune—wealthy, witty, and talented, who could have any woman he wanted. Yet his whole heart belonged solely to her.
Her heart skipped a beat without warning.
It was impossible to stay untouched; countless women dreamed of earning his devoted affection, and once upon a time, she'd longed for that special favor too.
Warm emotion made her eyes glisten with moisture.
Still holding her hand, Damian looked up from below, putting himself in a vulnerable spot, his voice close to begging. "I know you haven't fully opened up to me yet, but no matter what you think, Scarlett, you're the only woman I'll ever love for my whole life."
His confession left Scarlett's mind tangled, and she fell silent, unsure how to respond.
Damian pressed her palm against the front of his button-up shirt. Through the thin fabric, she could feel his heartbeat thumping steadily against her skin, his body heat flustering her further.
After a few seconds' pause, his tone turned possessive once more. "Same for you. From now on, I'm the only man allowed in your life, the only one who can touch you anywhere. You might call me unreasonable, but love just makes you this possessive."
