The moment the pin popped up, Scarlett bolted straight up from her seat.
Damian rose with her, asking quickly, "Got something?"
Scarlett replied, "Yeah, Nolan sent a location. I'm headin' over right now."
Damian said, "I'm comin' with you."
At the front desk, Scarlett pulled out her phone to pay; knowing she was rushing, Damian didn't fight her on the tab.
There were plenty of chances to buy her dinner later.
Following the map, Scarlett spotted a familiar silhouette standing near the river steps from afar—it was indeed Nolan.
Hearing the car horn, Nolan turned around to look.
Scarlett hopped out of the car, running up to him out of breath, her face packed with concern.
Nolan looked down at her, offering a gentle smile.
His face was pale, his frame noticeably thinner.
Gone was the spark that used to light up his eyes.
Instead, a shadowed stillness filled his gaze, stripped of any genuine warmth.
The forced smile on his lips only made him look more fragile.
Heartbroken, Scarlett looked at him and said softly, "You're hurtin', Nolan."
It wasn't a question, but a quiet statement.
Hearing her, Nolan just smiled faintly, "Not really."
Scarlett kept her eyes on him, "Faced with life and death, who can actually stay calm? Nobody can just brush it off."
Nolan let out a soft chuckle, "Maybe."
Snow blanked the banks, yet the water remained clear, shimmering under the glow of streetlights.
Watching the rippling water, Scarlett let out a long sigh, "Nolan, what are you plannin' to do?"
Looking out at the river, Nolan's voice sounded as still as the water, "I wanna end this early."
Shocked, Scarlett turned to him, raising her voice, "Don't talk nonsense!"
Nolan pulled his eyes back, looking straight at her, admitting calmly, "I mean it."
Tears spilled over Scarlett's cheeks, her voice raspy, "Is there really nothin' keeping you here?"
After a long pause, he whispered, "I promise you, I'll hang in there."
Even knowing it was a white lie, he said it anyway.
Damian had followed Scarlett out of the car, but reading the room, he stayed back.
Watching her hug Nolan made a jealousy flicker inside him, yet he kept his lips sealed.
Once Scarlett calmed Nolan down, she insisted on taking him back to the hospital.
Nolan knew returning meant going back into a cage.
Yet because she worried, he was willing to lock himself back in.
After returning him to the ward, Scarlett stayed by his side out of concern.
Sensing he shouldn't interrupt, Damian stepped out to grab some hot food.
When he walked back into the ward, the two were still chatting quietly.
Scarlett unboxed the takeout, sharing some light soup and side dishes with Nolan.
Nolan hated seeing her leave, but with Damian waiting nearby, he couldn't ask her to stay.
