Vincent offered no real explanation. He merely said evasively, "I'm not in the mood tonight. Maybe next time."
At his excuse, Scarlett asked with an amused smile, "Are you really not in the mood, or are you afraid you can't last as long as Damian?"
Every word struck directly at Vincent's pride, without the slightest restraint.
Vincent stared at her in surprise. "Do you really have to be so sharp-tongued?"
Scarlett tilted her face up toward him. "Then tell me. What did I say that was wrong?"
As he looked at her, he seemed to see pride and triumph in her eyes.
Her opinion of his stamina was like a thorn lodged in his heart. He should have been able to ignore it, yet every so often, it stabbed him again.
Vincent's mood soured further. His expression darkened as he said irritably, "Go to sleep. I'll take the guest room."
When she saw him about to leave the bedroom, Scarlett immediately sat up and called urgently, "Vincent, stop."
The moment Vincent heard her, he instinctively wondered if she still wanted to test what he could really do.
Yet uncertainty rose in his heart.
Should I try with her tonight?
Before he could decide, Scarlett had already come up behind him. She said, "You sleep here. I'll take the guest room."
Without looking at Vincent again, she walked out of the bedroom without hesitation.
Vincent watched her resolute back, his emotions tangled.
She moved quickly, almost running from the room.
By the time Vincent came to his senses, her figure had already vanished from sight.
When realization finally sank in, Vincent gave a bitter laugh.
He could clearly feel how much Scarlett had changed.
Perhaps, just as she had said, they could never return to the past.
But no matter what happened, he only wanted to follow his heart.
His heart told him he didn't want Scarlett to leave his side, much less be with another man.
Whatever the outcome might be, he seemed to have stopped caring.
All he wanted was to keep her beside him.
After Scarlett hurried into the guest room, she removed the key from the door and locked it from the inside.
Only after doing all that did she dare lie down with some peace of mind.
As she lay on the large bed, Damian suddenly came to mind.
The cruel words she had said to him that night had wounded her heart as much as his.
Maybe this will ease the pain a little.
