As the office door clicked shut behind them, the air inside grew heavy, so heavy it was hard to breathe.
Ethan tugged at his shirt collar, the movement sharp, his Adam’s apple visibly shifti
“If you wanna hit me, go ahead. I won’t stop you
“You-”
Austin raised his fist high, knuckles white with pressure, ready to strike.
He exhaled–once, twice–his chest rising and falling with barely contained fury. But in the end, he dropped his hand.
“Start talking.”
Turning around, he yanked out a chair and sat down with a cold stare fixed on Ethan. The whole scene felt like a pissed–off elder coming to settle scores.
Except this younger man had more presence than him.
Ethan’s gaze was lowered. After a beat of silence, he stepped around the desk and unlocked a coded cabinet. From inside, he pulled out a thick stack of files.
“This is everything I’ve found so far.”
His voice was rough. With his back to the window, the light threw his face into shadow, hiding the depth of his eyes. “It all goes back to the Porter house fire. Dawn’s parents didn’t die in an accident, it was a setup.”
Austin’s pupils flickered, a quick flash of shock before he reached out and took the files.
Pages packed with dense information–photos slipped between them–faces of shady people who had hovered around Dawn, each name and background documented in d
At the bottom of the stack was a will.
It was from Vera, Dawn’s mother.
T
She really had left Dawn a large sum of money, but there was no mention of where it was hidden, probably to keep it from falling into the wrong hands.
Austin’s brows tightened as he slowly composed himself. “This doesn’t add up.”

“If Mrs. Porter had all that money set aside for Dawn, then why were the Porters on the verge of bankruptcy?” Austin looked up, his eyes layered with doubt. “Dawn was nearly sold off to pay debts. How does that make any sense?”
Ethan didn’t say a word. His hair, unkempt from days of neglect, hung loosel
forehead, giving him a slightly wild, untamed look.
The arrogance that used to blaze in his eyes was gone–now they were darker, deeper, and guarded.
After a long pause, Austin stood up.
“I’ll keep digging too, but Ethan, don’t think this ends here. If it turns out this information is fake, I won’t let you off the hook.”
He turned and pulled open the door.
Tony, who’d been standing right outside, nearly stumbled in.
“Keep an eye on your boss.”
Austin’s voice was cold and sharp. Tony immediately bowed his head.
He didn’t know what had changed, but the man who used to have zero patience for Dawn’s uncle now looked like he’d swapped roles with him.
With a quiet sigh, Tony walked over to Ethan.
That hunched, worn–down figure gave off an almost painful sense of defeat.
“Boss…” he said softly.
“What do we do next?”
Ethan didn’t look up. The sharpness in his presence hadn’t faded, but now there was a quiet ache underneath it. His voice came out hoarse. Put someone on Roxann
who she talks to, what she does–everything. Don’t miss a thing.”
“Yes, sir.”
Tony nodded, but didn’t move right away.

He hesitated for a second, then let out a small sigh and spoke up again. “Boss, if you want to get to the truth, you’ve gotta stay standing. If you end up in the hospital again like last time. you won’t be able to do anything. And I don’t think Ms. Porter would want to see you like this

Out of options, Tara finally picked up the phone and called her globe–trotting husband, Will.
“Your son is barely holding it together. Are you planning to step in or what?”
“Of course I am,” came the deep, steady voice on the other end.
There was a hint of warmth in it, maybe even something gently coaxing. After a short pause, he added, “But don’t wear yourself out over him. This is something he has to face on his own … and he has to be the one to find his way through it.”
