Ethan watched the car until it disappeared from sight, the faint smile on his face slowly fading.
Anger. Frustration. Those were still emotions.
Better than indifference.
He gave a small, self–mocking laugh. Thinking of the hostility in Mason’s eyes just now, his own gaze darkened, deep and heavy.
In the car, Dawn sat with her eyes closed, trying to steady her breathing.
Mason glanced at her flushed face and asked in his usual calm tone, “Ms. West, are you planning to forgive Mr. Jackson?”
Dawn’s eyes snapped open, cold and sharp. “Mason, you’re overstepping.”
He immediately looked away and nodded slightly. “My apologies.”
It wasn’t really a big deal.
Dawn let out a slow breath and said lightly, “When it comes to relationships, everyone stands on their own side. There’s no real right or wrong. The moment you talk about forgiveness, it means you still care. Why keep torturing yourself like that?”
Mason had met all kinds of people, but after three years working beside Dawn, he still couldn’t quite figure her out.
By age, she was only 24.
By experience, she had barely entered society.
So young, yet she had gone through more than most people would in a lifetime. He couldn’t tell if she was just incredibly strong or simply good at pretending.
Mason didn’t know the real reason she came back to the country either.
Everything she handled directly with Vincent.
As a subordinate, all he could do was follow orders, do more, ask less, and when necessary, pretend not to know what he knew.
When they got back to the hotel, Mason switched to another car and drove off.

Anna’s voice came through, tipsy and teasing. “Babe, calling me this late? You miss me that much?”
A smile curved Dawn’s lips. “Yeah, I miss you.”
“Hold on!”
Anna got up from her booth. “Let me find somewhere quiet!”
A few minutes later, the background noise faded. Her cheerful voice returned. “Okay, what’s up?”
Dawn said straight out, “I ran into Leon today.”
The other side went silent.
Anna leaned against a wall, eyes reflecting the flashing lights nearby. Her breathing turned
uneven.
After a moment, she said softly, “I see.”
“If you saw him, that’s fine. Just say hi and leave it at that.”
“He talked to me for a while.”
More silence.
After a long pause, Anna asked lightly, “What did he say?”
“He asked about your fiancé. I told him I didn’t really know.” It was true. Anna rarely talked about her family.
Dawn repeated Leon’s words briefly, then added gently, “Anna, no matter who with, I’ll support you. But only if that person’s worth it—if he’s someone you truly love.”

Feelings were never about right or wrong.
When women got hurt by jerks, it wasn’t because they couldn’t tell good from bad.
People’s sense of love was simply different.
Candy for one could be poison for another. They would only know after tasting it themselves.

Anna gave a small, bitter laugh. “Dawn, I know staying tangled with him makes no sense… I want to leave him too.”
Leon had fixated on her fiancé, but he was the one about to get married.
Yet he wouldn’t let her
He’d even threatened people close to her.
She wanted to pour her heart out, but she also knew Dawn’s life was a mess right now. She didn’t want to burden her best friend with more worries.
Anna took a deep breath and forced a laugh. “I told him we’re done. Don’t worry. No matter what excuses he comes up with, I won’t give in again.”
Dawn could tell she was still upset and frowned. “So, does that mean you’re marrying your childhood fiancé?”
“Maybe.”
Who could say for sure?
The engagement had always been there. If her family pushed it one day, maybe it would just happen–quickly, quietly, without even a proper wedding.
Dawn didn’t know what else to say, so she gently changed the subject.
But both of them were distracted, their conversation running dry.
After hanging up, Dawn lay on her back, staring at the ceiling.
Maybe Anna’s situation had struck a nerve, because her mind started to spiral–filled with memories from three years ago and even three days ago.
Every one of them is tied to the same man.
She thought she was ready to face him again, but when it really happened, her heart still trembled.
Even now, she couldn’t tell if what she felt was anger… or something that hadn’t quite faded.
She let out a small laugh.
They hadn’t even been together that long. So why did the memories last so much longer than the relationship itself?
