Night draped the city in a thick black curtain. A few scattered stars glittered faintly above, while a silver–gray Porsche sped down the overpass like a streak of light cutting through the dark.
The Den was one of Northville’s trendiest nightlife spots–a mix of lights, liquor, and luxury. that catered to the city’s middle and upper class.
By the time Ethan arrived, the other three had already finished two rounds.
Their rule was simple: whoever showed up late owed three shots.
Ethan was never the one to arrive late, nor did he usually drink this kind of stuff. But tonight, to everyone’s surprise, he picked up the glass and downed all three without hesitation.
The group exchanged wary glances.
“You okay, man? Rough night again?”
Ethan didn’t answer. He leaned back on the couch, legs spread casually, tugging his collar loose. The raw, unrestrained masculinity that radiated from him needed no explanation.
That silence said enough. Alex poured him another drink. “Forget it, it’s just one night. I’ve never seen a woman who could stay immune to you for long.”
Brogan nodded. “He’s right about that.”
“Right about what?”
Alice, the only woman among them, gave a sharp snort. “You’re just reaping what Who told you to do those things without thinking about her feelings? That’s karma.”

sowed.
“Hey-”
Alex tried to signal her to stop, but Alice ignored him completely.
She went on, “Even if Dawn really came back to get revenge, you should be glad. It means she still feels something. Hate’s better than indifference, isn’t it?”
Hate, after all, was still a kind of emotion.
Ethan sat quietly in the corner, shadows cast across his tall frame.

He rolled the rim of his glass between long fingers, then lifted it and drained it in one smooth motion.
Alice clearly wasn’t planning to stop. She kept talking, one jab after another, until Alex and Brogan were practically sweating, afraid Ethan would finally snap and they’d get caught in the crossfire.
But to their surprise, he didn’t react. He just drank until the bottle was nearly empty, then grabbed his jacket and stood up to leave.
“Uh… you
think he’s okay by himself?”
“What could happen?” Alice replied, unbothered as she picked up her bag. “He’s a grown man. If he can’t control his own mood or his own actions, that’s on him, not us.”
As she passed Alex, he tilted his head toward the door. “Oh.”
She shot him a glance. “I’m leaving.”
Once she stepped out, Alice pulled out her phone and texted Dawn’s new number, asking to meet tomorrow night.
Men, she thought with a sigh, were useless. If anything was going to get fixed, it’d have to be her doing the work.
The next evening at eight, Dawn sat at the bar, still in her work clothes–a fitted pencil skirt and a crisp white blouse with subtle design lines that hugged her waist perfectly. Her hair was pinned up, accentuating her elegant, striking face.
When Alice walked in, that was the scene she saw.
Half the men in the place were practically lining up to talk to Dawn, each trying his luck–and each leaving defeated a minute later.
A shadow fell across the counter. Dawn didn’t even look up. Her tone was lazy and amused. “Told you, I’ve got plans tonight. If you want to drink with me, get in line.”
When no one answered, she finally turned around.
A woman with bold red lips and a magnetic smile leaned in slightly. “Do I need to get in line
too?”
“Alice!” Dawn immediately stood from her stool and pulled her into a tight hug. “It’s been forever!”

Alice patted her back with a soft sigh. “It really has.”
When they pulled apart, she studied Dawn carefully.
“You’ve really grown up.”

“I was already an adult,” Dawn said with a teasing grin, signaling to the bartender. “But tell me, Alice, you’re living in North City now? I didn’t even know this bar existed. Looks like business is booming.”
Alice’s gaze
flickered. “I come here sometimes. Most of my friends do. After a while, it just becomes a habit.”
Dawn smiled faintly. “Doesn’t matter where we are, as long as there’s wine. I really missed you, you know.”
“Could’ve fooled me.” Alice clinked glasses with her. “Three whole years, and not even a call. Now you say you missed me? You sure that’s not just the wine talking?”
Dawn took a sip, her smile faltering slightly.
“I … got hurt three years ago. I was in recovery for a long time.”
“Hurt? Where?”
Seeing the worry on Alice’s face, Dawn couldn’t help but laugh. “It wasn’t serious. I’m fine now. Just have to go for checkups sometimes.”
Alice exhaled in relief. “Does Ethan know about it?”
“He doesn’t,” Dawn said calmly. “And there’s no reason he should.”
