Once a Doormat Now Untouchable (Caleb and Sydney) novel Chapter 566

Chapter 566

As soon as Eliana was transferred into a VIP ward, Julian guided Sydney into a chair with steady pressure.

“No matter how worried you are, you cannot ignore your own body,” he said.

Sydney did not argue. Once she finished checking Eliana’s pulse, she already knew that anxiety achieved nothing. All they could do was wait for the research institute to analyze the blood sample. Only then could she formulate an antidote.

Yet no matter how she examined the situation, she could not understand how Eliana had been poisoned.

Elliot’s call arrived at the perfect moment.

It was for Julian, but he handed the phone to her at once, aware of the tension in her eyes.

“Miss, the police have not found anything toxic in the house. But after checking the surveillance footage…” Elliot hesitated.

Sydney asked, “Found what?”

“They discovered that Caleb visited Alan’s home earlier today. After he left, Eliana went out in a hurry. Something must have happened. She returned soon after, and not long after that, Marcus found her unconscious.”

Sydney’s face tightened. “You think the poisoning might be connected to Caleb?”

A chill ran through her, but she shook her head. That did not fit. Caleb would never do something like that.

Elliot continued, “It’s possible. The police are also checking whether she encountered anyone while she was out.

Anyone she met before collapsing became a suspect. Sydney thought for a moment. “How long between Caleb leaving and Eliana going out, then coming back?”

“One hour,” Elliot replied.

Sydney let out a slow breath. “Then he can be ruled out for now.”

This poison acted with extreme speed. It would have taken effect long before an hour passed.

Elliot accepted her conclusion at once. He did not even ask for her reasoning. “I’ll coordinate with the police and shift the focus to people she met while we were gone.”

Julian’s voice dropped. “Go in person. I want results today.”

With Elliot’s network, the demand was hardly unreasonable. “Yes, sir.”

When the call ended, Sydney realized Julian had been watching her the whole time.

She handed back the phone and explained without thinking, “I’m not defending Caleb. It’s just that the toxicity

analyzed everything so quickly.”

Years ago, she would have only stared at him in tears and asked what to do. He did not know which version of her broke his heart more.

Sydney lowered her eyes. “Do you think it could be Caleb?”

Julian’s brow twitched. He pointed at her stomach. “I don’t speak ill of that man in front of the baby. And I trust your judgment.”

Sydney froze. “What does this have to do with the baby?”

“I’ll never be generous enough to let it acknowledge Caleb as its father.”

She stared at him. ‘So that night, he did not understand me at all…’

She had told him he was the father, and he somehow concluded he needed to raise another man’s child.

How had she never realized he could be this magnanimous?

Marcus hurried in with the test results. “Sydney!”

He caught sight of Julian and corrected himself. “Mr. Sterling.”

Sydney looked at the papers. “The results are out?”

“Yes.” He handed them over. “Everything matches your expectations.”

Liver and kidney functions had taken damage but remained manageable. The rest aligned with her earlier

assessment.

Sydney studied the report, then looked toward Eliana’s still body on the bed. Her eyes stung.

“Alan already boarded the plane,” Marcus added. “He will land tomorrow morning.”

Relief steadied her. Alan might have an answer.

Sydney stayed in the ward without leaving.

At noon, Agatha brought lunch herself. With her there, Julian slipped back to the company to handle urgent work. Marcus returned to the clinic.

Seeing how Sydney barely touched her food, Agatha filled her bowl with soup and chided her gently. “No matter what happens, you must eat properly. If you collapse before the problem is solved, what then? Besides, you’re carrying a baby. It needs nourishment too, does it not?”

Sydney remembered Julian’s misunderstanding and realized Agatha still did not know the truth.

She hesitated, drank a sip of soup, and murmured, “Grandma, you didn’t even know the baby is Julian’s. Why are you so good to it?”
