Once a Doormat Now Untouchable (Caleb and Sydney) novel Chapter 572

Chapter 572

Chapter 572

Sydney could not argue with that. She kept her head down and drank her soup. She tried to hide her guilt. “I told Grandma that the baby is a girl, and she got especially happy.”

Agatha did adore little girls, but Julian still looked skeptical. “Just that?”

Under his gaze, Sydney grew even more uneasy. She opened her mouth to confess, then her abdomen tightened. A dull ache followed. She sucked in a sharp breath and frowned.

Julian saw her touch her stomach and shot to his feet, reaching for her. “What is it? Does your stomach hurt?”

“A little.” Sydney was a doctor, but this was still her first pregnancy. Panic flickered through her.

Julian bent down and lifted her into his arms. He made his decision at once. “We are going to the hospital.”

“No, wait. Just wait a moment.” She had spent the entire day at the hospital and did not want to put him through more worry,” Put me on the sofa first. Let me check my pulse.”

In his urgency, Julian had forgotten that she was a doctor. After a short pause, he set her down with care. He had always trusted her medical skills. That included Eliana’s poisoning. He knew that if Sydney could not solve it, then even when Alan returned tomorrow, the outcome would likely stay the same.

There was nothing more to it. Alan had poured everything into teaching Sydney. He had held nothing back. Sydney was gifted and mastered everything with ease. Given time and experience, she would surpass her mentor.

Sydney finished taking her pulse. She looked at the man whose face had gone tight with worry and smiled. “Why are you so tense? Pregnancy lasts nine months. Feeling uncomfortable once in a while is normal.”

“I am not worried about the one in your stomach.” Julian glanced at her. Her smile told him it was nothing serious, and his tone eased. “I am worried about your body.”

After learning about her pregnancy, Julian had asked Marcus about many things. Miscarrying at this stage would injure her badly.

The pain eased. Sydney lifted her head and fixed him with her clear gaze. She smiled. “Not worried about the baby at all?”

Julian avoided her eyes and looked to the side. He tried to sound casual. “Just a little.”

The child was not his. Yet these days of constant closeness had changed him. Watching the little life grow inside the woman he loved stirred something in him. He found himself looking forward to its arrival.

Still, admitting that he cared felt undignified. It felt like rushing to act like a happy father.

Sydney shot him a sideways glance. She saw through his stubbornness and softness. “The baby and I are both fine. My emotions were a bit unstable today.”

Eliana was half a mother to her. Seeing her lie motionless on the bed, poisoned by something so complex, her life hanging by a thread, left Sydney unable to calm her thoughts.

Julian understood this too. He sat beside her and drew her into his arms. “I promise you. Nothing will happen to Eliana. Do not let your mind run wild.”

“Did you get some progress from Dr. Vermont’s side?”

While eating earlier, Sydney had noticed several new messages on his phone. She had assumed there was news.

Julian answered with a question. “You should worry about your own health first. Do you need anything to stabilize the pregnancy?”

“No.” Sydney shook her head.

Polly always asked her the night before what she wanted to eat and adjusted the meals. Sydney asked her each day to add pregnancy-supporting herbs to the soup.
