Chapter 581
The more Raymond thought about it, the more restless he became. He shot to his feet and tossed out a single sentence. “Those two upstairs are your responsibility.”
Then he strode out. The drowsiness vanished, and the fatigue evaporated. Only one thought remained. ‘Sydney is my sister. That gentle, obedient child. The girl who later learned to walk on eggshells, she is my sister…’
He knew exactly how that old Sterling witch had treated her.
She was smart. She learned how to soften her tone, how to say what people wanted to hear, how to placate that old witch. When she had to, she even learned how to deceive her.
Even so, her life over the years had been nothing but misery. She should have grown up in the Hutton family, cherished like a princess. Instead, she endured years of hardship. How had that happened?
Setting aside the nine years she spent beside Julian, there were still more than ten years before that. More than 3,000 days and nights. How many decades does a person even get in one lifetime?
The moment the thought struck him, Raymond’s hand froze on the car door handle. Behind his gold-rimmed glasses, his eyes darkened.
He turned back and reentered the house, his steps carrying him straight toward the stairs.
Diana noticed at once and shouted, sharp and incredulous, “What are you planning to do? Kill her?”
Raymond acted as though he had not heard her. He was already on the stairs.
Diana stared at his back. “And then what? Megan may be stupid and vicious, but she will get what she deserves. That is not for you to decide.
“You know Grandpa’s principles. He has been upright his entire life. He will never break them for you.
“Ray, if you ruin your life over this, what about Tiffany? She has been single all these years. Do you not intend to give her an answer?”
Raymond finally stopped and turned around. His voice cut through the air. “My life has always been smooth sailing. But what about Vee?
“You say Megan will face consequences, but for all these years, has she not continued to act recklessly under our family’s name
“You all knew Syd did not live well in the Sterling family. But do you know how bad it really was?
“She was beaten until she fainted. Forced to kneel on gravel roads for entire days. She…”
Hatred for the Sterlings, Megan, and even himself surged through her. How could he have stood by all these years? She was his own sister by blood.
His grandfather had been right to scold him all those years. He truly was a complete bastard.
His voice broke. He lowered his head, and drops of water splashed onto the floor. When he spoke again, his voice was hoarse, clenched tight like a trapped beast. “She was almost assaulted by that spoiled trash from the Sterling family…”
Back then, when Julian wanted to kill Victor, Raymond had stopped him. Now, in hindsight, he should have been the one to strike first.
“What did you say?” Florence’s trembling voice drifted down from upstairs.
Raymond and Diana both looked up. At some point, Florence had woken from her nap.
Diana’s thoughts reeled as well. Both women felt as though their hearts were being twisted violently, flesh and blood torn together.
