Sydney's voice was soft and sincere.
Just like that, the strain in Diana's exhausted nerves eased. "Then I should thank you too."
What had she done to deserve that kind of trust?
After the call ended, the silence around them deepened. Only faint sounds drifted in now and then from the living room, too slight to matter.
The setting sun softened Sydney's features even more. Then, as if something had suddenly clicked, she turned sharply to Julian and pointed at him.
"Did you already know this might connect back to the Huttons?" Her tone was light. She did not sound angry.
A faint smile touched Julian's lips. "Settling scores after the fact?"
"I'm just curious, okay?"
Julian nodded and told her the truth. "Mr. Tarrant, the one Diana just mentioned, was Brimcrest's top officer back then. He was also Albus' former comrade."
Sydney understood at once. Julian had already found out. He had simply not told her.
When she fell briefly quiet, he looked at her. "Are you upset?"
"No."
These days, Sydney was completely at ease in front of him. Whatever crossed her mind, she said.
Julian added, "I know you wanted to wait until everything was clear before telling me."
Otherwise, she would have spent the entire process on edge, her emotions rising and falling without end.
For example, if she had learned before that phone call that Joshua had close ties to the Huttons, she would have jumped straight to the worst conclusion. And that was something she would have struggled to accept.
Julian had just lifted a hand to rub her head when a message popped up on his phone.
Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, they could see Agatha smiling and waving at them.
…
Nina arrived as if on cue. Sydney had just finished dinner when the two case files were delivered.
Even though she trusted Diana's word, she took the files upstairs and read them carefully in the bedroom.
Julian stayed beside her in silence and watched as she broke the seal, took out the slightly yellowed papers, and turned through them page by page. The caution in every movement was impossible to miss.
Sydney had already learned part of the truth from Caleb, and she had just heard the rest from Diana. Even so, as she read the complete official record, she felt a wave of heaviness.
The driver had died at the scene. The officer who had leaked their movements had already been sentenced. But the chain of evidence broke there. The investigation could not go any deeper, and the real killer was still out there.
By the time the sky outside had gone fully dark, Sydney finally looked up. Her eyes were misted with tears, yet strangely calm. "Flint and Eloise will be punished by the law one day, right?"
