Tyrone covered his face with one hand and grabbed the strap of Aella’s backpack with the other. “Are you hungry?” he asked softly. “Let me take you to get something to eat, okay?”
Aella shoved him away and sat down on the curb. “Go away,” she said. “I’ll wait for my dad to pick me up.”
Tyrone looked at her squatting there, puffed up angrily like a chipmunk. For some reason, he wanted to laugh.
He sat down beside her on the edge of the road. Aella scooted a little farther away in protest. Tyrone patiently moved closer again.
He tilted his head to look at her and froze. Her eyes were red. He was startled.
Without thinking, Tyrone reached out to wipe the tears from the corner of her eyes.
Aella slapped his hand away, angry. “You already have a girlfriend! Can you please keep some boundaries?”
Her tears fell even harder after that.
Tyrone didn’t stop. He gently wiped her tears and coaxed her in a low voice,
“I did have one. But you cried her away.”
The moment Aella heard him say he didn’t have a girlfriend anymore, her stormy face cleared at once.
She knew it.
Tyrone had been teasing her on purpose.
Getting a girlfriend wasn’t like buying groceries. You couldn’t just say you had one and then say you didn’t.
Aella stood up, muttering under her breath, and shot him a sideways glare.
Tyrone stood too, brushed the dust off the back of her pants, and pulled her toward the car parked nearby.
Aella clung to his arm on purpose and refused to move. “You said you had a girlfriend. How far did you get with her?”
Tyrone gently removed her hand and paused to think.
Aella watched his serious face and snorted silently. If there was no girlfriend, just say so. Why pretend?
Tyrone finally spoke, calm and honest, “She got hurt saving me. She chased me for a year. I dated her for two months.”
‘That’s it?” Aella asked.
‘That’s it,” Tyrone replied.
Aella smiled happily. “I’m not even your girlfriend. Why are you telling me all this?”
“Didn’t you ask?” Tyrone said.
Aella stomped her foot, annoyed. “Just because I ask, you answer everything?”

Tyrone fell silent.
Aella suddenly got mad again and chased after him, hitting him with her fists.
“So you really did have a girlfriend?
“A perfectly good guy and someone else had ruined you!”
Tyrone grabbed her hands to stop her from flailing around.
Aella leaned forward and bit him on the chest.

Tyrone stepped out of the elevator and saw Brad waiting at him at the door.
“Whatever it is, we’ll talk at school tomorrow,” Tyrone said as he unlocked the door.

Brad pushed his way inside. “I saw everything happen between you and Aella tonight.”
Tyrone narrowed his eyes. “You followed me?”
Brad raised both hands in surrender. “Easy. I was just passing by.”
Tyrone looked away and bent down to change his shoes.

Leaning against the shoe cabinet, Brad asked bluntly, “You’ve spoiled that girl since she was little–fine. But now you’re even pushing away the woman who saved your life because of her. Are you serious?”
Tyrone’s expression turned firm. “Aella just turned 18. Aren’t you overthinking this?”
Brad didn’t agree.
“Zera almost died saving you. She never used it against you. She quietly chased you for a year. You finally agreed to try dating her for a year, and after just two months you backed out. Don’t tell me this has nothing to do with Aella.”
Tyrone replied without emotion, “Aella is impulsive and dramatic. She’s having her SAT soon. I can’t let her get distracted.” Brad straighthened his face. “So just to keep Aella from causing trouble, you pretended to break up with Zera?”
