The man, already at the door, paused. He glanced back at her, his eyes dark and inscrutable. Then, he reached up, tugged at his collar, undoing a button, and walked back.
Chloe Reed sensed danger. ’I should have kept my mouth shut.’ She scrambled to her feet. "Don’t you dare try anything! I have to go to work!"
Seeing the panic on her face, a flicker of something unreadable crossed Walker Grant’s eyes.
"Don’t say things like that ever again,"
he said calmly, "Otherwise, I don’t mind taking that role to the extreme."
’No need for medicine, after all.’
Chloe Reed gritted her teeth, suppressing her emotions as she watched him leave.
She sat back down on the edge of the bed, her long lashes lowered, veiled in loneliness and sorrow.
She still didn’t believe anything he had told her last night, even with the proof he had provided.
And now, because of it, he had her trapped, unable to get the divorce she wanted.
Chloe Reed felt utterly drained.
Just then, her phone rang. She pulled it out and saw it was a call from Charles Reed.
"Hello,"
she answered, her tone icy.
Charles Reed said, "Come to the hospital."
"What for? What do you want from me?" Chloe’s tone grew even colder.
"Chloe Reed, I’m your father! Is that any attitude to take with me?! Can’t I call you unless something is wrong? Your mother is still in the hospital, haven’t you even thought about coming to see her?" Charles Reed’s composure didn’t last three seconds; his anger boiled over.
Chloe Reed gripped her phone. "Don’t you have your perfect daughter, Sunny? What difference does it make whether I’m there or not?"
"You brat!" Charles Reed was so furious he wanted to smash his phone. "Get over here right now! If you don’t, I’ll give your shares to Sunny, too!"
With that, he hung up before Chloe could say another word.
Hearing his words, however, made Chloe pause.
’What does that mean?’
’What does he mean, "my" shares?’
’Charles Reed is giving me shares?!’
