Owen Sterling, however, wasn’t very familiar with the market. He took notes on his phone and said, "Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll check with a realtor later."
Chloe Reed’s lips tightened. Throughout the entire ride, Owen Sterling had been trying to make small talk with her.
The conversation was all about the city’s best food, fun places, and unique characteristics.
He acted like a friend, maintaining just the right amount of distance.
Chloe Reed chatted with him half-heartedly.
The car soon arrived at the restaurant.
They ran into Sunny Reed at the entrance. She said to Owen Sterling, "Manager Owen, I just got a call. My son isn’t feeling well, so I have to go home and check on him. I won’t be able to stay tonight. I’m so sorry. I’ll treat you to a meal another day."
But Owen Sterling said, "Family is the most important thing. You should hurry back."
"Okay."
Sunny Reed nodded, then turned and left.
Chloe Reed didn’t think much of it and followed him into the private room, where her colleagues had already gathered.
Everyone was drinking at the get-together. After a few rounds, they had all had a bit to drink.
Partway through, Chloe Reed got up to go to the restroom. Her figure vanished around a corner, but at the far end of the hallway, two people were watching her.
The two exchanged a look and went into the private room next door.
When Chloe Reed came back to the private room, she saw that the glass in front of her had been filled to the brim.
Owen Sterling was now standing beside her. He smiled and said, "I’d like to toast you. On the way here, you were telling me all about the local culture, which helped me get acquainted with the city much faster. Thank you so much."
With that, he downed the contents of his glass in one go.
The others all looked at Chloe Reed.
"Manager Owen is so easygoing. Working together in the future will definitely be a breeze. Chloe Reed, don’t be the one to hold everyone back."
A clamor of voices egged her on, putting her on the spot and leaving her with no choice but to drink.
