"COUGH, COUGH... I... I’m fine..."
Miles Hawthorne said with difficulty, even giving her a brief smile.
But his face was covered in alcohol and his eyes were bloodshot. He looked utterly wretched.
’How could he possibly be fine?’
Chloe Reed was furious. She snapped her head up to look at Walker Grant. "Are you insane?! How could you do this to him?!"
Walker Grant sat on the sofa, his long legs crossed, holding a delicate glass. His eyes had been fixed on her since the moment she walked in. He took in her furious glare as she questioned him.
He quirked his lip into a smirk. "He wanted to drink. I didn’t force him."
"You’re shameless!"
’And he has the nerve to say he wasn’t forced?!’
’Just a moment ago, two bodyguards were forcing Miles to drink! He nearly drank himself to death!’
Chloe Reed helped Miles Hawthorne sit down on the sofa and handed him a tissue. Then, she looked at Walker Grant. "If you have a problem, take it out on me. Don’t drag innocent people into this."
"Take it out on you? I couldn’t do that. I’d feel too bad for you," Walker Grant said softly, setting down his glass. "Besides, he’s not so innocent."
Chloe Reed suddenly recalled the words he had said in the CEO’s meeting room, and a chill spread through her.
"Chloe, I’m okay. Don’t be scared..." Miles’s breathing had steadied, and he tugged on her sleeve.
’How could Chloe not be worried about him?’
She said, "You should go to the hospital for a check-up. I’ll go with you."
Miles shook his head. "I’m working on a project with Grant Corporation, and one of my subordinates wasn’t entirely honest. I came here specifically to apologize to him."
"Did you hear that? I didn’t force him," Walker Grant said, his gaze dark as he looked at her. "Chloe, come here."
But Chloe Reed ignored him, looking instead at Miles. "So, are you done drinking?"
Miles’s gaze fell to the coffee table.
