The look in Preston Vance’s eyes, seen through his glasses, turned somber. He gazed at the mother and daughter duo desperately trying to stop him and let out a soft sigh.
"All right, I won’t go."
In the end, he gave in.
...
"Chloe, I’m so sorry. I couldn’t find a top-tier doctor." Preston Vance’s voice was filled with guilt.
Chloe Reed’s eyelashes fluttered, the last glimmer of hope in her eyes extinguished.
Gripping her phone tightly, she did her best to remain calm. "It’s okay," she said, her voice hoarse. "I’ll figure something else out."
Preston Vance wanted to say something more, but the call abruptly ended.
He couldn’t help but sigh. The memory of the pronounced tremor in Chloe Reed’s voice sent an inexplicable wave of frustration through him.
Chloe Reed stood in the hallway. There wasn’t a breeze, but she felt bone-chillingly cold, as if she’d been plunged into the depths of hell.
Just then, the sound of steady footsteps approached. As a familiar presence drew near, she closed her eyes.
A man’s even voice sounded beside her ear. "Chloe, have you made up your mind?"
Chloe Reed looked at him, her expression that of a complete stranger. "Walker Grant, you will regret this."
"I don’t think about the future." Walker Grant stared at her. "I only want right now, with us together."
"Hah..."
Chloe Reed scoffed, but her heart was filled with desolate sorrow.
She had no time left to hesitate. The countdown on her grandmother’s life had begun.
Finally, her voice raspy, she said, "Fine. I’ll drop the lawsuit."
The next second, she was pulled into an embrace.
The man’s arms were powerful, and his scent enveloped her, inescapable.
Her body went stiff, and her face, pale and drawn, remained unresponsive.
Walker Grant’s voice murmured in her ear, "The doctor is already at the hospital. As soon as the consultation is over, your grandmother can have the surgery."
